What was this game?

Please help before I go mad...

I'm trying to remember a game I used to love in the arcades in the UK.
I think it's from the mid to late 80s.
It's a side scrolling shooter in the vein of Nemesis and Salamander.

I recall it had a choice of 3 robots (or battle-mech type suits?) - blue, red and white.

They could be upgraded with pick-ups.

I don't know if it was ever ported to console, I only ever played it in the arcades.

Only game I can think of that sounds like that and I could be wrong is Pulstar

I can't remember the names but I've played a couple games like that except they were vertical scrolling, not horizontal. Are you sure it was left to right scrolling and not up?
