Re: netplay

Each system would be slightly different but the general idea is the same. Also not every system supports netplay.

Step 3 is basically the same in each of these and is the only tricky step. If you make it past that then you should have no problem hosting netplay. Only one person needs to host, connecting to a host is easy. If you can successfully host then you should post here so others can connect to you. Don't post your IP address here, instead save it for IM, PMs, chats or Phones.

SNES:
  1. You and your friend should be on chat, telephone or IM or something similar. Here is one AJAX Chat but you can use whichever method you like. Speaker phones are best.
  2. You and your friend select the same game and load it in ArcadeOX Full Mode.
  3. Both of you go to Port Checker - Torrent - a (very) tiny BitTorrent client
    • This page will say in big letters either "An error has occurred!" or "OK! Port 6096 is open and accepting connections."
    • If both of you have the OK message then the person with the fastest computer should be the Server. The other is the client.
    • If only one of you has the OK message then that person is the server and the other is the client.
    • If both of you have the error message then it gets tricky.
      • One of you needs to forward the port. For instructions go to PortForward.com - Port Forwarding Guides Listed by Manufacturer and Model find your router in the list and click it. Then click "Click here to skip this advertisement... " in small print at the top right of the page. Then click ZNES at the bottom right of the next page. The instructions on that page will tell you to use 7845 in UDP. Instead use 6096 and do it once for UDP and once for TCP.
      • Now go back to repeat step 3 above. Press Control and F5 to refresh the utorrent page and find out if you correctly forwarded the port. If it still says error then either you did something wrong or you also have a software firewall. You will need to forward the port in the software firewall also.
  4. Now you should have decided who is the server and who is the client. The server will click Netplay > Act As Server from the SNES menu.
  5. A pop up will appear and say your Host Name and Port Number.
    • The host name will only work if you and your friend are on the same network - same house, or office or school. If you are trying to connect through the Internet then you need your public IP address. You can get it from the utorrent link above. It says Checking port "6096 on XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX..." the X's are your IP.
  6. Give your IP address to the client (or host name if you are on the same network).
  7. The client will click Netplay > Connect To Server.
  8. A pop up will appear. Enter the IP address or host name that was given to you. Click OK.
  9. The game should reset and you will be connected.
  10. If either of you switches to a different window besides the game then the game will pause for both people. So if you are switching back and forth between an IM window then the game will keep pausing.
Sega (this should work for all Sega systems)
  1. You and your friend should be on chat, telephone or IM or something similar. Here is one AJAX Chat but you can use whichever method you like.
  2. You and your friend select the same game and load it in ArcadeOX Full Mode.
  3. Both of you go to Port Checker - Torrent - a (very) tiny BitTorrent client (different link than the one above)
    • This page will say in big letters either "An error has occurred!" or "OK! Port 5394 is open and accepting connections."
The server will click File > Netplay > Start Netplay Game from the Sega menu.
  5. A pop up will appear. Click create.
  6. Give your IP address to your friend (the client).
  7. The client will click File > Netplay > Join Netplay Game.
  8. A pop up will appear. Enter the IP address that was given to you. Click Join.
  9. The server should see that you connected and click Start. The game should reset and you will be playing.
Gameboy
Port 8765 is open and accepting connections."
    • If both of you have the OK message then the person with the fastest computer should be the Server. The other is the client.
    • If only one of you has the OK message then that person is the server and the other is the client.
    • If both of you have the error message then it gets tricky.

  4. Now you should have decided who is the server and who is the client. The server will right click the game and select Link > Listen > OK.
  5. Give your IP address to your friend (the client).
  6. The client will right click the game select Link > Connect.
  7. A pop up will appear. Enter the IP address that was given to you. Click OK.
  8. The game should reset and you will be playing.
NES
Port 27886 is open and accepting connections."
If it still says error then either you did something wrong or you also have a software firewall. You will need to forward the port in the software firewall also.
  4. Both of you will click File > Close. This closes the game.
    • If the menu disappears press Alt to see it again. Click Netplay > Connect.
    • A popup will appear. Click Add.
    • A file browser will appear. Go back one directory and select Storage.
    • Select the game you want. The name will start with "nintendo-".
    • The game will appear in the game list. Highlight it and select launch.
      • A new popup appears.
  5. Now you should have decided who is the server and who is the client. The server will clock the host tab highlight the game again and click Host in the bottom right corner.
    • Give your IP address to your friend (the client).
  6. The client will click the connect tab and enter the IP address of the server.
  7. A new popup appears.
  8. Check "Click here when ready".
  9. When both are connected and ready the game should start.
Atari Lynx also supports Netplay but it is highly buggy and essentially unusable. The other systems/play modes do not support netplay.

Re: netplay

Gmail has free voice over internet. You can call any phone in North America for free from your computer or call someone's gmail. You just need a cheap microphone and speakers. It is probably the best way to communicate with each other while setting this up since typing during a game is not very easy.

Re: netplay

hamachi helps lag to go away but unfortunately zsnes is 1.43 is the only really good netplay system. snes9x will work but if you have hamachi you could maybe reach a few states/provinces away with little lag. ideal for playing with real life friends would be to just to use snes9x here as is. It's all really complicated and my friends and I have spent weekends figuring this stuff out. Pretty much have it mastered now

That and Skype, it's free too, you can always use headphones/earphones as a mic too depending on your computer... Strange, yet true.

Re: netplay

I just set up a mamehub account. I like that it is a single server. Now just to find someone on there.

It works pretty good, just have to set it up properly and audit your games. Will host some 4 player games. Hopefully others join.
