Just did a little reading up to see if there are alternative ways to get these maps, and apparently they will be available from the DQVC eventually.
One guy said he got the Zoma map and his level 40 guys were decimated in 2 rounds... I want that map!
I got 4 so far.
Iron Cave of doubt: lvl 5, (cant find this one)
Granite Tunnel of Woe lvl 1 (complete)
Bronze Mine of Dolour lvl 12 (complete)
Iron Tunnel of Dolour lvl 13 (complete)
Nice, I love it when that happens. Getting your but kicked brutally is one of the best parts of the game, because you know that your gonna come back later for the ultimate vengeance.
Okay so I just got a quest to go and destroy an equinox with a bang, (as in the spell).
So I go back to the grotto where he was and beat him with bang, and the guy gives me another map! lvl 7. the something tunnel of joy. (giggitti)
I wonder what the joy part means? King metals perhaps....
Anyway my point is you can go back and get more maps from them.
So I've been kinda playing by an unwritten rule so far: We aren't allowed to look up hints online for these games, we have to rely on each other to help us through if we are stuck, just like back in the nes days.
That being said, who has figured out how the treasure maps work excatly?
These are my unconfirmed theories:
-The treasures that are to be plundered are only dropped by the last boss.
-Sometimes he won't drop them.
-After awhile the boss will return to the grotto for another chance at the loot, I just tried going back in right away and the boss wasnt there.
-I have no idea what the percentage is next to where it lists the loot, "fire claw 10%" I'm thinking that maybe the grotto has 10 treasures and I've collected 1 so far.
My playtime is all messed up from leaving it running constantly. Does closing the DS while it's running suspend time played? Either way I really wish I kept an accurate time now that we're posting about it and all.
I haven't posted stats yet so this is all of it for completeness sake. Long boring list, spoiler enabled.
Kinga and Dudebro had really bad agility so I had to level thief and martial artist for some natural agility bonuses. I kinda went a little crazy with Kinga but he was always dead last in the round.
I noticed we all have very little alchemy completion btw. There must be tons of recipes if we're only at 5-10% with steven beating the game and I'm really close to it.
Also has anyone else been told by the Innkeeper in Stornway that a special visitor is upstairs waiting and to take the lift to meet them? I got that twice and both times I found nothing anywhere in the Inn. I hope I'm not missing something.
Edit- After beating the first grotto I went back to town, rested and saved, went back and he was there again. I assumed he respawns when you exit, how soon did you reenter?
I actually haven't beaten it yet, the last guy still kicks my butt, I haven't tried in awhile but I just changed Kathleen from an armamentalist to a sage so I need to build her up to a level that can sustain more than one hit before I head back in.
I'd guess I collected maybe 70% percent of the recipes, but I should have done what Ten did and collected everything along the way. Plus there are a ton of recipes with items I haven't even come across yet. I spent like 3 hours yesterday trying to collect nectar, so I could make sages elixers, so I could make prayer rings, so I could make life rings, so i could make life bracers, so I could make an uber miracle sword. A soon as it was alchemized I was like, "Darn, I shoulda just kept those life bracers" just thinking about having Steve equipped with the miralce sword, the life bracer and the sacrocent (sp) armour, I'd be getting like 100 hp back every round.

Oh, and I just had the one visitor, it was someone from a past DQ and she gave me an awesome Armour that i just recently moved on from.
Well, I was informed of the visitor, I went directly to the lift, I had the choice of going to the suite (whatever its called) or to the visitors room, she's still there i can visit anytime.
There are a ton of things that can't be done until after the last boss, including uber bosses that you will need to become extremely powerful to beat.
I must've clicked the lift without giving it time to show me the names. I have two characters up there atm. One is that russian princess from DW4 and the other is Angelo from DQ8, cool. The girl gave me a good dress but Angelo gave me some lame armor(looks cool though).
Angelo makes a stop by does he? Sweet, I betcha Taloon makes a stop by and gives you an iron safe.
And By russian princess I assume you mean Alena, yeah she's my only visitor so far. I should check, because sometime I'll look away during familiar dialog, maybe I missed a notice.

Lo and behold Angelo was up there.

Damn I thought it was random. Btw I think the visits might have something to do with connecting to the shop. It seems I didn't get the visit until I first checked it, might be coincidence.
I had to look it up. If you don't wanna know don't read the spoiler. I don't think it's a spoiler though since it's seemingly impossible to just figure them all out. I wasn't sure how purist you're playing this.
( Click to show/hide )
It seems the characters will unlock semi weekly once you access the store and trigger it. They all give you an item for talking to them, changing your hero to a relevant job, having a complete Inn(yeah right), your birthday and after completing a certain quest.
The only reason my alchemy is at 10% is because it's been a main focus for me. The going would be much easier if I wasn't constantly strapped for cash. Current encounters award 300-400 gold and I could easily burn through 100,000. I was hoping the gold golems would be my salvation but 600 on a rare formation isn't even worth it. The game is basically forcing me to move on and forget alchemizing let alone upgrading at the next town.
I'm enjoying the game but I feel like it's punishing me for my playing style. It's pigeon-holed me into playing the way it expects to be played and it's really irritating my RPG OCD that I wont have enough cash to even upgrade one piece of equipment at the next town.
@DB like I said before, I don't want the help of the net until I've finished all I'm gonna finish on my own, and with the help of whatever you guys figure out on your own, so please continue to put your tainted info in a spoiler.
@Ten, just to be clear, your issue is that you want to collect every piece of equipment, without gaining too many levels? Why don't you use the alchemy pot trick?
Find a recipe that the combined price of the ingredients is less than the sale value of the result. you might only make 100 bucks a pop but you can do 99 at a time eventually.
It's just my playing style. I don't want or expect to 100% the game I just like to feel that I've accomplished everything that I reasonably could in an area before I move on to the next.
The alchemy pot trick wont work. The vast majority of things you alchemize require items found in the field or the profit would be so marginal (2 gold) that it would be faster to grind.
I'm not complaining, the game is very enjoyable and addicting. I would hate people to think I thought negatively of my playing experience with the game. It's just simply that there is so much that it's a bit stressful playing the way I do. I've just defeated to golden lizard at Gleeben and I know where to go next but I'm guessing that I'll spend at least 15 hours grinding for cash, alchemizing, questing, and diving into my treasure map before I move on.
During break today at work I finally took down the Granite Tunnel of Woe (or whatever) lvl 1. For my prize I was awarded another map; Iron Mine of Joy lvl 14. Do the levels indicate the difficulty of the area?
