You're right! I hadn't thought about that. I'm too fixated on the match against Argentina that that hadn't crossed my mind. That's probably how Mexico is thinking anyways. They shouldn't be thinking about anything else other than Argentina.

Let's see who else makes it to the knockout stage today.
I'm thinking Netherlands and Japan for group E, and Italy and Paraguay for group F.

Re: World Cup 2010

The final 16 is almost set! That USA game was absolutely miraculous. As I've said before, I'm not a big fan of USA soccer but these guys showed incredible perseverance and definitely deserve to advance to the round of 16. In fact, their bracket sets up pretty well for them to reach the Semifinals. They don't have to beat any major superpower (Brazil, Netherlands, Spain, Argentina) to get there, and they should have a ton of confidence moving forward. If they can get their back line in order, I like them above anyone else on their side of the bracket. Uruguay and South Korea are dangerous, but beatable.

This afternoon's game between Spain and Chile is huge. If Spain wins, I believe they jump ahead of Chile and claim top spot in the group. If they tie, the would be 2nd in the group and be forced to face Brazil in the round of 16. Not exactly a matchup you want to see this early in the tournament.

Yep this is going to be a good match. I just hope there's some scoring in this one unlike earlier today with the Brazil vs Porutgal match.

I hope so. Chile and Spain have something to play for, Portugal/Brazil didn't. Why did Dunga sit Robinho, anyway? Just because, or is he hurt?

Re: World Cup 2010

Sweet goal by David Villa! TERRIBLE mistake on the keeper's part.

Joz, I've said this before, you get major points for that Univision link.
I can't tell you how many people I've passed this onto and they all love it.
I actually think games are better televised in Spanish. I can only pick up words here and there, but the announcer is just great.

Re: World Cup 2010

Your very welcom Tanc.

Damb I really didn't expect the US to lose that match. Ghana really pulled out all their stuff with a very impressive show. This wasn't a high scoring match, but the dramatics was there all the way as they went into extra time. Uruguay vs Ghana is going to be an interesting match.

Today is the day! We got two incredible match ups. A classic between England and Germany! And a revenge match for Mexico against Argentina! I've been up since 7AM Central due to me not being able to stay asleep. I'm so damb excited!
Yesterday my wife got a little bit mad at me because when I woke up, she said "good morning" and the first words out of my mouth was "uhhh the games!"

Poor end to a poor World Cup campaign for England. O.k the disallowed 'goal' was shocking but not as shocking as the gulf in class between the 2 teams.

Re: World Cup 2010

USA deserved to lose. I can't believe how many times their back line let them down in this World Cup. They still have a LONG way to go before they are truly relevant.

Argentina and Germany were clearly the better squads in today's games. I think the final outcome would've been the same regardless of the officiating mishaps, but it's a shame that there were HUGE blown calls in each game. I felt worse for Mexico because they came out of the gate so strong. That 1st goal really kicked them in the stomach. Germany looked like they could score on England at will, but the referrees missing that goal is unforgivable.

I am never a huge advocate of instant replay, but soccer would be well-served to implement some sort of replay system on plays that lead to goals. Without replay of some kind, the officials will continue to get exposed. It's not even their fault, really. Technology has simply advanced so much that it has become far more reliable than the human eye.

By the way, does anyone else watching the US coverage of the Cup hate Alexi Lalas? That guy has got to be one of the worst analysists on television in any sport.

Re: World Cup 2010

I think that FIFA is going to be forced by many to put in the instand replay. The refs are horrible this WC...I'm very sad at what has happend to both England and Mexico. Eventhough both were having a difficult time with their respected opponents, the denied goal and off side goal where moral squashers and affected the games.

Re: World Cup 2010

I agree about goaline replay. I think it will be implemented by the next World Cup. That FIFA commissioner sounds like a crazy man, though.

Penalty shots happening RIGHT NOW in Paraguay/Japan! Awesome!

Tied at 1-1 currently...

Damn, Japan lost. I could've used them to advance in my bets vs. my Dad.

At the end of the quarterfinals he and I will be tied with 4 teams left. I still have Germany, Spain (or Portugal), Uruguay and Ghana. He has Brazil, Netherlands, Argentina and Paraguay.

I beat him in the round of 16, advancing 10 teams to his 6. At $50/team, I'm up $300. Thanks to you guys for the insight! My only regret is not taking Argentina over Italy. Argentina is obviously playing incredible right now, and I think they are going to be tough to beat. An Argentina/Spain Semi-final would be SWEET.

Re: World Cup 2010

Yesterday a caravan of Brazilians(can tell by all the flags) of about 10+ cars drove all over town laying on their horns and hanging out the windows. I guess the cops didn't care since I saw them doing it right in front of the Police station. I gotta say it's amusing how it's cool to be that annoying when it's sports but anything else and they'd be pulling you over and giving you a hard time.

Your mom just witnessed grown men after their hopes and dream have been obliterated. I guess the Nike Curse is doing it's job.

@DB- That's interesting bro. I bet if it was a caravan going towards a peace rally against a company trying to cut down trees for a new mini mall, the cops would be out there busting some heads in no time.

Re: World Cup 2010

Brazilian fans are awesome! I sat in the middle of a Brazilian cheering section when the US played Brazil in '94 at Stanford stadium. It was one of the most enjoyable sporting experiences in my life.

Speaking of Brazil, we have a great match tomorrow between Brazil and Netherlands. I'm already planning on coming into work late so I can watch the entire match. I have absolutely no idea who is going to win, but you've got to like Brazil.

Re: World Cup 2010

Just seen this posted by my brother on another forum, thought I'd share. Not into numerology per se, but this is intriguing!

Brazil won the World Cup in 1994, before that, their last World cup win was in 1970. If you add 1970 + 1994 = 3964

Argentina won its last World Cup in 1986, before that, only in 1978. Adding 1978 + 1986 = 3964

Already Germany won their last Cup in 1990. Before that was in 1974. Adding 1990 + 1974 = 3964

Following this logic, one could have guessed that Brazil was the winner of the World Cup in 2002, since this was the Cup winner in 1962!

Checking: 3964 -2002 = 1962

Was 3964 a cabalistic number ...?

Numerology really work ...?

There are few data to convince me, but if you believe, it's easy to stare at the answer:

Who will win the World Cup 2010 in South Africa?

Elementary, my dear:

3964 - 2010 = 1954

And who won in 1954 ...?

Germany!!

Re: World Cup 2010

So then how will we ever have a new champion that's never won the World Cup ever win with this number system you've presented? Numerology is interesting and everything does tend to follow a pattern when you look for one, but I really think the Netherlands is going to take it this year.
