Is it really their creation when they're just adding onto or tweaking someone else work? For example lots of games include free modding software, should people be able to cash in on that? It seems like devs will stop including those or at least charge extra to offset the "loss" of profit.

I hope this ends up a good thing for the industry, I really do. I'm worried it will cause the modding scene to become just glorified DLC that's even lower quality than what we get in most modern games. You know, 20 bucks for packs of skins and stuff. That's not good for the hobby. Sadly lots of people have more money than sense and they will buy that crap. Just look at how they sell all that stuff for MC on consoles when PC players get it free. Up until now stuff like that was free because the creators knew no one would pay for it, on PC.

All that being said I think the main reason I'm against it is because I know that if it catches on we'll see something like 99% of mods with a price tag. That means less people using them and less people experimenting(because they can't be sure it will sell). I know I won't be using any unless I know for sure they're worth it and they've been out a long time so I can be extra sure. I know I'm not alone.

So no, you didn't really misread me I just didn't expand on how I feel. I'm very wary.

Creators have the right to ask for payment when someone uses their creations. Its all well and good if someone wants to offer their services for free but the gaming community is truly disgusting if they ready their pitchforks over someone trying to sell their services. People have the right to earn a living, be paid for their time/talent/knowledge.

This would be well and good if it were actually implemented in a very controlled and organized manner. Look around a bit and see just how much of a mess this has caused. Mods are getting pulled all across the nexus because other people are stealing them to make money. Even if your mod uses assets from another mod, you're allowed to put it up for sale without compensation to the others, nor do you even need to so much as mention them. There's little to no quality control, only "after the fact" removal. Some mod creators have even said that they wanted to remove their mod from the paid workshop and valve won't allow them. Valve has stated that should a mod that you've paid for stop working, all you can do is "politely ask the modder to fix it". Not even mentioning Valve's absolutely ridiculous 75% take and only paying a modder should it sell over $400 worth.

This is a complete mess and Valve is really showing how inept and money-grubbing they truly are.

I don't approve of the way Valve is handling the implementation though. The fact that paid mods can use the content of free mods without any repercussion or compensation to the original creator is idiotic. Also the mod creator only getting 25% of the cut is ludicrously low.

And they provide zero quality control, zero support, zero guarantee and do nothing to prevent people from ripping each other off?
All to monetize something players have come to expect to be free.

That is an insulting cash grab.

What is the typical mod price?
How many sales could the average mod expect?

I predict
Modders will participate thinking they will make money. Most will make $0.
Scammers will try to make money but will rarely cross the crazy $1,200 threshold meaning most scammed money will go directly to valve.
A few elite modders will prosper.
Valve will bank.
Players will lose.
Valve regrets their decision after the backlash. Hopefully.

There's people flooding reviews, forums and other stuff on stuff on steam with messages about boycotting paid mods. They're also starting to put stuff like "how much does it cost to download this" on screenshots. Gabe might have a riot on his hands.
