Sounds like those are PAL versions of the game. MESS will enforce the region check if the game demands it. Our MESS is the NTSC Mega Drive/Genesis.

MESS is accurate to real hardware. You can't play PAL games on an NTSC console due to region protection. Also PAL games run at 50fps instead of NTSC 60fps so the game would be slower at best and break your TV/console at worst due to incompatible video signals.

This isn't exclusive to Genesis, it's the same for most video game consoles.
