Wait wait wait wait wait wait
Digital titles from the 360 aren't compatible with Xbox One?
I thought disks would pretty much inherently be out with the new "download your games" format but this is all sorts of ass.

No. Why do you think it would? Discs have nothing to do with it, the system architecture is completely different from the 360. Same story with PS4.
Both say they're working on a solution, but you can't escape the technical realities of a different platform. Amusingly, this means that online inept Nintendo is the only one with some sort of forward digital transfer service, lol.

That would be because the Wii U is basically fancy edited version off a Wii that has been slightly edited and allows HD

Re: XBOX One
Thanks for the replies to my question. If I'm understanding correctly, it seems there are two big gripes. Used games and backward compatibility. I've done some more reading this morning and think they see thier error with the used games and they are supposedly working on a solution. I think it's a little early to be claiming Microsoft killed the used games market. I also don't see the backward cmpatibility issue as that big of deal either. The 360 couldn't play original Xbox games and it sold ok. I understand for some this will not make them happy but since I don't even own a 360, it doesn't factor into my decision at all. I'm with stevencassidy in thinking it's bonus but shouldn't be expected.
They also hit my market right on the head with their deal with the NFL. I've been watching fb on Sundays since the Miami Dolphins won their first Superbowl and can't wait to see how this works in action. Hell, if they get this thing released in time for this season, I might not be able to wait until Xmas. I'm a huge sports nut in general and love my fantasy sports. Fantasy sports is a huge market and if they do this right, I could see some people buying this just to increase their enjoyment of watching sports.
Anyways, this horse has probably been beat to death and all that's left to wait and see how the sales shake out.
P.S. @ Fudgy - I just read an article that says Microsoft will continue to make new games for the 360 "for a long time". Pretty sure "for a long time" = as long as we're making money off the sales.

I forgot about the PS4 not being backwards compatible either.
Still, I figured that the systems would be similar enough to at least run all those Xbox Arcade/PSN titles.

Nope. The Wii/360/PS3 were all based on PowerPC CPUs. PS4/XBOne are based on the usual x86 CPU architecture (just like PCs). Code from one architecture does not run on another. Recoding the games would be a significant time/people investment.
This is why Nintendo is charging their small fee if you want your old Virtual Console games to work with the extended gamepad features (off-tv and whatnot).

Re: XBOX One
What boggles me is everyone wants backwards capability and without looking it up I'd assume the first console to do that without reselling the game is ps1/2. Being backwards doesn't turn me off, it's the used game thing and games I'd be interested in.

In an unrelated comment if that's true that's awesome didn't know that. However, not many went backwards besides a few.

Backwards compatibility is not a trivial addition to a system, a fair amount of planning and engineering is required if system compatibility is being added in hardware.

The Genesis was backwards compatible and came with all of the hardware to play SMS games EXCEPT they changed the cart slot. So you had to buy an adapter that did nothing but change the slot size. It cost about the price of one game - around $40.

Sony hasn't completely ruled out backwards compatibility, just that it won't launch with it.
Sony has briefly mentioned the possibility of emulation or streaming PS3 downloaded games, but not about disc games.

Re: XBOX One
I think that they might end adding a kind of backward compatibility later, remember that the PS3 and the Xbox 360 compatibility with ps2 and Xbox was achieved via emulation, that's why not all the xbox games were compatible with the 360.
The first PS3 models had backward compatibility via hardware, and if you have one of this models you are able to play any ps2 games (mine is one of the last of this models), later they cut this feature to reduce costs and they included the compatibility via emulation, but it has the same problem as the 360, is not compatible with all the games .....
I think that with a lot of planning, and if it represents a real competitive advantage they may add some kind of backward compatibility this way. But don't forget that they want to keep their old consoles in the market for some time after the new generation launching, so they may wait to add it.
There are a lot of elements to take in consideration here ... Let's see what happens in the E3 and later, I'm sure that Sony and Microsoft still have a lot of surprises ahead.

Re: XBOX One
I think people are missing an important point about backwards compatibility. None of them want it, they only pander about it to make their customers happy. They want you to ditch the old stuff and buy their new stuff. It's the same reason why the COD devs release poorly coded games every year and do nothing to support them.

You forgot to re-buy games again when they offer then on the new download service. Like all the PS1 and PS2 games sony puts out hoping you don't have the older system or discs to play them again.

Re: XBOX One
I wouldnt really care or backwards compatibility I still have my old PS1, PS2 so no reason why I wouldnt keep our PS3... the only issue would be if we are never able to transfer our PSN/XBLA purchases.... Like I have about 15 ps1 classics in mine I hope to be able to transfer at some point. I know it wont be possible at first but I trust Sony will be able to emulate them some way since they have done this on their handheld consoles or maybe even give you free access to these via Gaikai.

Re: XBOX One
there not to destroy the used game market matter fact there proble more likely trying to stop piracy then trying to destroy the used game game market . 360 lost so much do to piracy . with the new system they proble trying to make it harder .
your attacking a system that not even out yet . which is pointless . just wait to see the sales of the thing and the games annouced at e3 then when you see how it does sales you can make better critizms .
also all this talk about ps4 better then the xbox one already makes no since cuzz if they try to charge a crazy price for it i see sony losing a crap load of money like they did with the ps3 after first . they lost so much money they did not catch up to microsoft till the end of the life cycle . either way price will play a huge part for both microsoft and sony out the gate.

Re: XBOX One
Having backwards compatibility also allows a system to launch with a fairly sizeable library.

Re: XBOX One
first of all not phraising a system i am on talking point. actully to be honest what i am doing is talking with a open mind and most are bashing the system .
makes no since whats so ever to bash a system . we should all be talking about what types of games we want to see rather then cry over games we might not be able to play on it . there old . i mean seriously if you want to play games you already own might as well keep the 360 or ps3 still hooked up . i mean i got over 5 systems hooked up still playing .
look to the future of gameing not to the past . we should be talking about what cool games might we get . or talk about the new possibilities of it .

Re: XBOX One
We are allowed to bash a system as much as we want if we think its bad. It's our opinion. The Xbox One has shown much more negative than positives so far.

I'm sorry sora, but it's not dumb ... Do you know what ESPN and all the other sports networks do? Just that, it's easy to make some judgements when you are aware and familiar with the market. It's possible to predict with a nice grade of success what teams have better chances to have a winning season, you just have to check their roster, their new players, the coach, the history, statistics .... For example, I can assure you that the Raiders are not gonna win the next season, and that Denver it's gonna have a winning season .... easy, not dumb, just have to analyze the teams, and the statistics.
With simple analysis, checking history, trendings and reaction of the people, you can make some cold predictions .... right now, we don't have elements to think that the console it's gonna be a huge success, but the people it's not that happy with what they have seen til now... it's not dumb to play with the numbers.... this even can help Microsoft realize what they did wrong and make it right.
