Odd thoughts by Tenser

Two undergraduate chemistry students at a major university had a highly successful semester in an introductory chemistry class. So their confidence is high, so high, in fact, that they decide to blow off their reading period, you know that period they give you to study for final exams. They go to a fraternity party in a town quite a distance away and they have a pretty good time, so good, in fact that they probably got a little drunk, met some girls, who knows.

So good, in fact, that they don't make it back in time for their final exam. They missed the exam. In a panic, however, they devise a plan. They agree to tell the professor that they had a flat tire and this prevented their returning in time to take the exam. They pleaded with him, "Let us take the exam, please. This could ruin us. We promise nothing like this will ever happen again." The professor agrees and tells them to return the next morning. The two return the following morning, and the professor gives them their exam, but decides he isn't going to hang around. He has them leave their books and backpacks in the office and sends them to different rooms to take their exams. The test consists of one five-point question, some molarity problem, and each, smiling confidently, answers the question. Then they turn the page, and the next question is a 95-point question. And our question is: What is the question? What is the question that the professor puts on the makeup exam?

Of course, the second question could have been anything, but with the information you were given, and if you were the professor and you suspected these two of devising, and inventing, and fabricating all of what had happened, you might ask what very question?

Good job Kong.

_________________________________________________
Some years ago when my son Louie got his driver's license, he asked to use my truck. He wanted to take a trip to the next town over to visit a friend of his, and I gave him my keys with the admonition, "Don't drive very far because you are not an experienced driver, and I certainly don't want you driving on the highway or out of state or anything like that." And he said, "Don't worry, Dad." Now, being the trusting soul that I am, I didn't bother to write down the mileage or anything like that. I am a fool, and this is the only time I made that mistake. Now, that night he returns and hands me the keys and I go out to the truck and I get inside, of course. And I didn't see anything on the seat or anything like that. It was dark and I didn't turn on the headlights, therefore I didn't see the 5,000 bugs that were smashed against the windshield. But I got in and I started the engine. And again, I had no idea what the gas gauge had read. Like I said, I had no idea what the odometer had read. I started the engine and sat in the truck for maybe a half a minute with the engine running, and I knew in an instant that he had gone much farther than he had said. Much farther from home. The question was, How did I know? And the hint is the Grateful Dead.

Too dark to see stubs. Your fist try was a lot closer.

If your son tuned into a local station when he left the state wouldn't he tune back into a local station when he returned. Or perhaps he was just scanning through the stations and happened to stop on static when he got out of the car.

Here's the official answer:

When I got in, I turned the engine on, and the tape was playing, the volume was turned up all the way, the song was "Friend of the Devil," I believe. I eject the tape, and upon ejecting it, it goes to default mode, which is the radio. And the radio is tuned to a station that we don't get in Boston. 'Cause what I hear is static. And I realize that he couldn't have had the radio tuned to that station, if he was just going two towns over. He had gone to Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. Got a tattoo.

NEW RIDDLE!

Ray: I was struck by the fact that most kids are out of school, or are about to be out of school, for the summer. And less their little brains turn to mush, I thought that this would be a good puzzler for school kids to ponder. Here it is: Potatoes are 99 percent water and one percent what? Potato. So say you take a bunch of potatoes, like 100 pounds of potatoes and you set them out on your back porch to dry out.
Tom: Yeah, when they are dry they should weigh about a pound.
Ray: Well not drying out completely. And as they dry out the water begins to evaporate. And after awhile enough water has evaporated so that the potatoes are now 98 percent water. If you were to weigh those potatoes at that moment...
Tom: They'd be lighter.
Ray: Yes, how much lighter? That's the question. Now you can solve this puzzler algebraically, and I invite our school age children to do this, and anyone else who wants to do this. Now if you don't solve it algebraically, you are going to get the wrong answer.

Does density come into play?

I don't know the exact breakdown, but I can only assume that one cc of water weighs more than one cc of dehydrated potato.

If not here are my thoughts:

If 1% Potato and 99% water weigh 100 pounds, then we have 1 lb Potato and 99 lbs water.

1 lb of potato will stay constant as the water decreases:

If the water by volume has decreased from 99% to 98%, as a result the potato by volume has increased from 1% to 2%. For this to happen, either the potato weight would have to decrease, or the water weight would have to decrease. We know the potato weight is constant.

I wish I knew how to set this up algebraically, but my take is that:

where p = potato weight and w= water weight:
for:
1p + 99w = 100 to change

we know that 1p is now 2 % which would make the total weight 50 lbs, 98% of which is 49lbs.

1p + 49w = 50 lbs.

100lbs - 50lbs = 50lbs lighter.

Awesome job old timer. Glad to see they taught that "new math" when you went to school. That makes it:

Kong - 2
Celinta - 1
Brodyman - 1

This calls for a new riddle...

A special vehicle was first produced in 1949. It was powered then by a Jeep engine but now uses a Volkswagen engine. It has a base price of fifty thousand dollars. It has never raced but can often be found in a closed course, so to speak. A famous sports celebrity was the first sales representative for this vehicle. What is the vehicle and who is the famous sports celebrity that we know so well.

NO GOOGLEING! THAT'D BE CHEATING!

BIG HINT: Indeed as the vehicle was named after the celebrity. I would even go so far as to say that the celebrity wouldn't be half the celebrity they are if it wasn't for the vehicle.

alright...here goes.

My answer is a zamboni...and the famous sales rep, who the zamboni was named after was Guiseppi Zamboni. He was a famous olympic skater in the 1932 Lake Placid games from Sicily.

He was so distraught over missing a double salchow (which was unheard of in those days) due to unfavorable ice conditions, that he made it his life long dream to learn english, come to America and invent an machine to keep others from having their respective dreams crushed. So with 100 lira to his name and an Italian -> English dictionary, he stowed away in an ocean liner in the summer of 1934 to create a machine to automate the job of "pulisca l'ardesia" as cleaning the ice was called back then in his parts; which literally translates to "cleaning the slate".

After he finished 15 years later and sold his first dozen machines, he sold off the rest of the unused Jeep parts, and was quoted as saying in broken english, about his new invention, and his fulfilling his dream, that he had "wiped the slate clean," which coincidently is where we get that figure of speech today.
