Re: Capture the Flag - March '13 Contest With a Big Prize
i'm getting tired of not being able to save my score at the end of the game.
i just played 2 of the worst games ever, i found it hard to die and wanted it to be over already, that's how bad it was. after about 15 minutes of gaming hell i could not save the score in time, and some of these games do not show the score afterwards.
on some games, you have to save the score page BEFORE the game ends.
ridiculous...
i had to save a game score even though i was not finished, just to get any score at all.
the method is flawed for many games...

It's bad game design, not a problem with the site. Basically, you just need to be quick on the draw with the "p" key. Believe me, we've all lost scores this way, it's a small price to pay considering how amazing the set up is overall.

Re: Capture the Flag - March '13 Contest With a Big Prize
I remember playing one game for a couple of hours. the score counter went up by 1 every time you killed something which could take a while. it was the typical three digit --- counter.....only problem was went back to 0 once it hit 300. I think I quit when I saw that. thinking back though, I probably should've asked if that would've counted or not.

Re: Capture the Flag - March '13 Contest With a Big Prize
yeah, overflows count...after submitting go to view scores and you will see your pending submission...I add a little note about score overflow or time of game etc. if a longer one.
however, I set new WR on qbert-colecovision first week I was here where I lost a WR-score turnover game. I think a previous game they felt was higher score when it actually was lower. not a huge deal as I know I easily can beat what I did sometime soon.

Re: Capture the Flag - March '13 Contest With a Big Prize
woohoo!
unbelievable!!
i just won a sega controller for my kung fu master submission!!!
what a surprise!!
cool website. the coolest!!!!
permafrostrick, thanks for the racing game info, works ok!!!
cheers!!

i must say, if the verifiers watch the actual game, they can tell if it is a good game and sound score. sometimes we miss the window after a sudden death. cannot the verifiers take a screenshot on our behalf?
i know i will get it right on games i play often, but for the one off's and comp games we hate, this would be a great help. after all, it's an arcade score league, not a "press this button quickest competition"!!!
many records are lost over this, methinks.
cheers fellows,
paul.

you know, I've wondered this too. doesn't seem like it would be too much hassle to just snip it to your score in cases where it just jumped screen and you couldn't see your score anymore.

I have the same feeling, because i spent almost 2 hours on a game (102 dalmatians on gameboy that i didn't know before playing for the 1st time) and i had the bad surprise after finishing the game that it didn't show my final score so i press F12 to submit something, which i suppose is the .inp (recording) of the game even if i knew that the snapshot was wrong.
That's why i answer this to the administrator who contact me :
Quote:
Ok i wasn't sure that it could be accepetd but like i play almost 2 hours (it was the first time i played this gem ^^), i couldn't know that this game didn't show the score at the end and more, like i finished this game, i didn't take the snapshot when it shows me the last password to unlock mini-games.
i was sure that you could access to the inp and that you could make the snapshot at the good moment. (in the website i play and where i'm an administrator and confirmer, we exceptionnaly can make the snapshot when this problem appears).
This is sure that i won't play this game again and risk to miss the good moment to press F12...
And what would have you do if i press F12 during the ending, but without the score ?
I think that your rules should change because i think that they result of the ancient systemn, where the inp wasn't accessible by you.
I'm just a bit frustrated because i slept after midnight yesterday to finish this game and there will be nothing to do to go back in the future and press this F12 key at the good moment ^^
|
Reading all the other comments, i think that this situation isn't exceptionnal and that it discourages the gamer to make the better score possible just to be sure that the score will count.
Cheers

Re: Capture the Flag - March '13 Contest With a Big Prize
what I have done with many games I am not already familiar with is a quicky game...just to see how it does end and shows the score or not etc.
yeah there definitely are some console games you need to submit just as you are about to lose your last life...or a couple where they end so quickly you just have to submit while the game still is going really...which is game design flaw...not the site.
however, in those cases it would be nice if after submitting we can place a keyword in the comment where the inp can be watched anyway to get the final score and a better screenshot. we even could show estimated final score so the reviewer knows when it's coming so could have throttle off for most of it to save time.

I wrote my final score (41.940 on 102 Dalmatians) in the comment which is accessible when the game is being processed and i add that i finished the game.

Re: Capture the Flag - March '13 Contest With a Big Prize
One small tip on RC Pro Am.
The yellow car can and will take off to super speed if you start shooting other cars in the race. You can stop it if you shoot him as soon as he takes off but if not you better make sure you stay in at least 3rd because he'll start lapping you if he can.

capture the flay march 2013
hi everybody,
a few of us are competing in this competition, and it is quite fun.
i doubt if i will even get in the top 5, but i'll give it a crack.
my problem is i have only played 11 of the games chosen, and 5 of them are my choices!! so, i only know 6 games out of 85.
i don't know how to play these games, so i am asking for some advice along the way.
my gaming history is:
arcade - zx81 - cbm64 - snes - pc - mame. thats it.
my first ask is, how do you control the ship in mad planets? i only discovered that it rotates with the mouse today. how do people play it?
thanks alot in advance.
i will ask a few more soon. i hope i'm not a drain on you guys.
all the best,
paul.

Re: capture the flay march 2013
A real Mad Planets has the same type of controls as Tron. Flight stick with a trigger for a fire button, and a spinner. This is hard to do in MAME, which is why the Tron score here is pretty low (that's about as high as I could do with a keyboard ) although now that I know how to use the mouse for a spinner, I may be able to increase it slightly.

Re: capture the flay march 2013
Kid Chameleon
This game involves lots of practice and level learning. If you have never played it then you are at a disadvantage.
The only points you get are
Time left on your clock.
Completing the round quickly - separate from the time left bonus.
Not getting hit once.
Not picking up any items.
Following the shortest path.
You do not get points for killing enemies so skip them if you can.
If you have over 20 diamonds you can press Start + A (Enter+Z) for a special move. If you have over 50 diamonds you get an extra special move. The move is different for each mask. The best, IMO, is the jason mask with over 50 diamonds - you get an extra life.
Fatal Labyrinth
Test your items early.
Don't advance too fast. Fully explore every level.
Don't eat food if you already have over 70.
There are tips for this game posted in the forums. Try searching for it.
Micro Machines
Memorize the levels. If you have never played before then you are at a disadvantage.
Pick Spider as your character.
Spider is the best character. To the right of Spider is the worst character. As you scroll left they get increasingly better. After a character loses 3 (or maybe 4) races they are eliminated and you replace them with someone else. You want to pick characters so that you are racing against the worst ones at the end of the game and you never race against the best ones. So that means making a guess of what level you will get to and counting backwards to determine how many racers you will face.
Marvel Vs Capcom Clash of Super Heroes
Quarter roll strong punch + strong kick. Repeat.
Gun Smoke
A wanted poster is hidden on each level. If you can't find it then you can buy it from one of the townsfolk. You can't fight the boss until you get the wanted poster. If you take too long to find the wanted poster your score could get disqualified for farming/leeching.
Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition
Pick Balrog. Press C.

Re: capture the flay march 2013
In the other thread Kong gave some great tips for strategy. Trying to play all of the games would be a big mistake.
Regarding Mad Planets. I refuse to use a mouse on any game I don't have to. I haven't played this game much (like three or four times) so it will take a lot of practice to get used to this set up but this is how I did it. Left hand on the joystick for moving the ship around. Thankfully this game has autofire or I'd be in trouble but I put my right thumb on a bottom button (on the xarcade) and just hold it there for shooting. I then use my right index and middle fingers on two top row buttons for rotating the ship. For me, this game would be a lot more fun if I could control the ship like in Asteroids.
Star Trek-Original arcade uses a spinner but I control it like Asteroids. Left index and middle fingers for left and right. Right index for thrust, right middle for shotting, right ring finger for warp and a thumb botton for nukes.
Space Fury - Uses buttons just like Asteroids. Left fingers for left/right and right hand fingers for thrust and shooting.
Dig Dug - Using my 8 way joystick for this game doesn't work for me so I use the keyboard. Arrow keys for moving and right enter for pumping. The arcade uses a 4 way joy and has buttons on both sides so you can either pump with your left or right.
Spy Hunter 2 - Left hand buttons for steering. Right hand buttons for gas/shooting and shifting. I've never played on an original so no clue how it's set up.
Video Pinball-Left button for left flipper, right button for right flipper and another right button for bump. I've played this a ton both on an original and in MAME with the art. RU's version has no art so if you've never played before, you're at a big disadvantage. Hit all the targets and go down the left side to get the extra ball.
If you haven't done so, I suggest you make a donation so you can watch gameplay. I learned a ton about Alpine Ski just by watching Rick's replay.
---------- Post added at 03:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:08 PM ----------
I forgot to mention on Video Pinball there is no tilt so bump the hell out the game if you want.

Re: capture the flay march 2013
Puzzle Bobble points are calculated as n bubbles are dropped as (2^n)*10 & 0<n<=17
Lode Runner you get 10000 bonus for not killing enemies
Hunchback is memorization
Trog pinnapples can earn up to 80000 per trog after a few and level completion gives points
Marvin's Maze you get a score multiplier for multiple emenies killed by laser
Go! Go! Mile Smile you get score multipliers for each piece collected while still outside egg (max: 1000 per) and with number of enemies kill with rainbow egg
Dino City once you get past the first level it get signifigantly easier as lives become pretty abundant
Dracula: Crazy Vampire talk to the witch and you can attack, you have to collect the bat symbol to preceed to the next level you stun with one hit and can gain life by touching and killing enemies, also you gain potion while you are at zero in exchange for life in sunlight(involentary)
Mr.Nutz hidden coin increase the overall score after you beat a boss
I know how to play most of the other games but most of them are generic beat'em up or sidescrolling shooters, don't hesitate to ask and more game specific questions.
