Re: dead celebrities
@steven- You've said "celebrate" and "put on a pedestal" but neither of those have happened here, not even close. Saying rest in peace means just that, you wish them a peaceful rest in the afterlife. That is not celebrating or putting them on a pedestal. Not everyone believes in hell or punishment after death. Some people believe that death is the end and saying RIP is a way of saying "your pain/struggle is over now".
Technically speaking I bet millions of people have wished people like Hitler to rest in peace. It doesn't mean they support him or his beliefs. It just means they hope his demons have left him in the afterlife and he can be at peace, something he didn't have in life.

I'm somewhere between atheist and agnostic, why does that matter? I wish most people a peaceful rest when they die. I'd hate to find out some people are unable to rest because they weren't perfect.

By definition there is no where between Atheist and Agnostic.
You're one or the other.

Fine, to be more clear I fall into the weak atheism category. I don't believe there is a god but I don't presume to know that to be a fact. I still don't see why it matters though.

It mattered because you cited your reasoning for wishing someone RIP was because of rest in the afterlife. I thought your were atheist, so I was curious as to how that made sense to you.

I didn't say it was my reasoning, I said it was how some people feel about it. I just don't think it's fair to disrespect someone who died because they had some problems like a criminal record or alcoholism.
Also I'm the guy who's been outspoken about people just posting RIP in this topic, remember? I think it's pointless because generally people wish everyone a peaceful rest. We don't post about famous murders who die so posting RIP is redundant.

I agree, what's up with the attitude of arguing/debate is a bad thing. It's that the majority of the users here think that if peoples opinions don't match up then it's a bad thing for the forums. I feel the oppisite, it's way better then typing lol in the best thread ever every few days.

If there is a hell I hope King burns in it. One less filthy scumbag on the planet. Any guy who beats, abuses, and torments a woman for years deserves to rot.

Ok..I wasnt going to jump on my box of Tide for this topic but I feel the need to comment on this post.
I will try to refrain from typing any four letter words in this as well..
How in the world can ANY of us condemn a mans soul to hell? Thats GODS job. Let him figure it out. NONE of us know the ins and outs of what he and his wife went through or what led up to the police being involved. In any argument or fight there are generally 2 parties involved. Im not placing blame on her if she was just battered by him but In my experience normally there are contributing factors in a fight like that. Without trying to look up police records and everything I'll just leave that part alone.
Now as far as him dying...yes in my eyes its a tragedy. EVERYONE has deomons they need to outrun and out think. Some are more visible then others and are reported more frequently, but If a person at least recognizes that he has issues/ struggles and looks for help like Rodney tried to due then what more can we ask of a person? He was just was on Dr Drews show for addiction issues and he was trying to battle those demons. As a matter of fact in April he was just doing a mentoring program where he was speaking to people about the dangers of alchohol and drug abuse and about the struggles hes had in his life...as well as the riots and his beating.
I would think that carrying around that burden of BEING Rodney King on your shoulders everyday of your life..plus the physical and mental scars of the beating itself affected him until this day. Out if his situation came a lot of negative and positive changes to the LAPD and to the country as a whole and HE was the person on the news asking for people to not make it hard for the young and old people and to ask us all to get along.
In my opinion ANYONE that dies @ the age of 47 in his pool is a shame. Ive heard reports that he was possible drinking that morning or smoking weed, all the reports are from his wife so far. Ive heard that she has been giving conflicting accounts of what happened. Now this might just be from stress or grief or who knows what, but until the medical exam is completed I'm holding judgement.
So to EVERYONE saying that he was SCUM or less then human or Hitler or whatever you want to label him as....I'll be the one to say he was a Human being. Faults, contradictions, inadaquancies, joys, triumphs, emotions, breathing, blinking, farting, cussing, loving, hating HUMAN.
Take that for what its worth.
Now Im getting off my box of TIDE and returning back to topic.
RIP Rodney King a (Im sure reluctant) Celebrity

Re: dead celebrities
I don't believe in hell but if I did, I wouldn't think anyone deserves to go there for any reason.
Every one can be right.
If you believe in an afterlife, then why not wish everyone have a peaceful one.
Spending time hating only hurts you, especially if the other person is dead. Wish him the best, or not, then move on with your life.
But don't rewrite history or gloss over negative facts just because the scumbag is dead and you think telling the truth is disrespectful.
Most people probably don't know much about Rodney King. Young people probably have never even heard of him.
If you are going to talk about him then it should be pointed out that his one claim to fame was being a scumbag that routinely beat his wife and drank and drive and taunted cops and that his scumbag life lead to revealing police brutality in L.A. that lead to a riot that lead to 50 deaths that lead to cleaning up the LAPD. He won millions in a lawsuit and was still a scumbag that routinely beat his wife and drank and drive.

I'm not positive but I think that is pretty well documented with both sides being clearly in the wrong.

Normally there are two sides to most disagreements and both are right and wrong at the same time... But repeated wife beating is typically an exception to that rule. Battered wife syndrome follows a pretty set pattern that is normally the man's fault.

Two beliefs can blend. If the only meat you eat is Thanksgiving turkey once a year then IMO you are somewhere between a meat eater and a vegetarian. You can be a little bit of both. DB is right, the word for somewhere between atheist and agnostic is weak atheist, which is very common. Weak atheists live their life as if there is no god and they are probably very confident that there is no god but they wont go so far as to say they know there is no god. The first half of that sentence, how they live their life, is probably more important to them than the last half, which is just a meaningless philosophical question that can not be answered.

Re: dead celebrities
His claim to fame was getting beat by the LA PD on tape and saying "can we all get along?" on tv during the ensuing riots. The stuff about his criminal record isn't as well known, I don't remember hearing about it until he died.
Btw his beating sparked the riots but I think it's unfair to put the responsibility on him, it was a long time coming. The LAPD had a bad reputation for mistreating minorities and profiling them. I'm not saying anyone is making that claim I'm just making sure we keep it in perspective, Rodney King was just the straw that broke the camels back. The trial was the direct cause.
Btw look at this crazy footage from the riots. It starts a little slow but it really gets interesting. Reporters sure were more reckless back then-

His previous criminal record and the events leading up to the beating were convinently not reported or minimally reported by the media at the time. King had a previous conviction for robbery and was on parole. When King's BAC was checked 5 hours after the chase/beating, it was found to be just under the legal limit, meaning that he likely had a BAC between 0.18 to 0.22 at the time of the chase, thus well over the legal limit.
The chase started when Highway Patrol attempted to pull over the speeding King who thought that his DUI would be in violation of his parole. He exited the highway and proceeded through residentual neighborhoods, speeding at 80 mph.
When pulled over, the two passengers complied with police orders, however, King was acting basically like he was on drugs, then failed to respond to police orders and then appeared to reach for a weapon. As result, he got a beat down. Throughout the beating, he would continually refused to respond to orders.
I have several cop friends that are now trained on this procedure. It is important for cops to verbalize while beating a perp down that the perp should "stop resisting"
Concerning his record after the beating, I think we was involved in several other accidents and incidents of DUI throughout the years.
The tape of the beating was taken to a news station in LA, where the media immediately exploted it. IMO, King was not the cause for the riots, but he became the scapegoat. The cause was the verdict from the trials and the media hype surrounding it.

With the passing of Andy Griffith, that leaves only two cast members from the Andy Griffith show left: Ron Howard and Jim Nabors.
