Dan Hsu on Bitmod noticed that when game consultant and former Newsweek writer N'Gai Croal gave Paradise a test drive, however, the game had trouble reading his steering actions. While it could read his feet, which were covered in shoes, Project Natal would not let him steer the car.
However there was no problem when another driver was at the wheel. True, Croal does have dreadlocks but if that was a problem someone with long hair would also send Natal into a spin. Apparently it might be a problem with the near-infrared spectroscopy, which has a problem detecting darker skinned individuals.

Some webcams had serious problems with that issue, and the cameras with facial recognition, that are unable to recognize an Asian person's open eyes as open. Technology just has to make assumptions of what defines a face, and what defines an object in view as a human being.

Hmm, I haven't heard of that, but who knows, Nintendo changed the name of the Wii from "The Revolution" so it's always possible ^_^

re: Kinect
I tried kinect last night. I was very unimpressed.
First, admittedly I am not the key demographic at all. Second. I only tried a basic boxing game and a squash game (bounce ball against a wall). There are better games for it that I have not seen yet.
Second. It sucked so bad.
There was a slight lag between my movements and the game character's movements. In the boxing game it just made it unrealistic and feel like I wasn't really playing. In the squash game it made it almost impossible to play.
The squash game was almost the same game I have seen in Science Museums for the past decade of two.
In the boxing game I first tried punching like I was in a real fight. But punching air is really boring, and if you do it hard then the lack of contact causes you to over extend so you end up just lightly punching which seems to defeat the whole purpose.
I then found that flailing my arms wildly was the best option and made the game extremely easy. But what is the fun of just mindlessly windmill slapping the air? It looks like this will be the best action for most games.
They didn't seem like games at all but just unresponsive gimmicks.
You controlled a mouse cursor by moving your hand. It was so inaccurate, unresponsive and jittery that I could barely control it enough to start a game.
Now I have played all three motion controllers.
So far I haven't played any good games for any of them but that's just because I have only played a few in store demos.
The Will and PS3 controllers seem to be much more responsive and have much more potential for creating real games. I still prefer a regular controller but I can see how many players would prefer motion controls for at least a few games.
But the Xbox Kinect just felt broken. I don't see how you could make a real game that an adult would enjoy with it.

The in store demos suck because they have to keep it at a setting where it is compatible with everyone who comes to play, who may be of varying height, which makes it very inaccurate. Also it probably gets confused by other people passing by.
A clear space is absolutely necessary for Kinect, despite whatever Microsoft says.
My mother bought a Xbox360/Kinect bundle for herself and has had tons of fun playing with her friends on it. And me, for that matter. I thought it was very accurate when I was playing it.
It could be the novelty of the experience but it was really fun for me.

re: Kinect
There wasn't people passing by. But it could have been because of the generalized calibration.
What games have you played? What type of actions do you perform to play those games? Does wildly flailing your arms in a windmill motion work better than the intended motions? Have you seen the youtube video of the guy playing a racing game and not moving at all and still winning?

How did they drop the ball? All I see is a motion system that is better than what the Wii offers.

I don't follow Kinect so I'm not sure what you're referencing. Are you saying that all the games are basically broken or just a specific case?

I didn't state it as fact I just said, from what I've seen. If it's broken like SFF implies then I guess I'd be wrong right? Sorry you'll have to wait for another xbox related post to bash me, this one is a dud.

You watched that video of a guy not paying attention to where his kid is? Same thing could happen with a Wiimote. That and your friends opinion. Sure is damning evidence.

This "dud" you speak of had enough bang for you to go back, realise you were being a fanboy, then replying with a new, and proper, stance that explained how you were impartial to the gimmick that you never tried.
At least the Wii motion controls work great for fps's, racing games, and a few others here and there. At this point the idea of a fps that uses Kinect effectivly is laughable.
I'm not completely writing off the Kinect as a worthless piece of junk yet, but I have a feeling it will become undenyable in due time.
Is there anything for it announced that anyone is excited for? This is a serious question, there were the launch games, Kinect Adventures, Kinectimals and a few others, are there any new ones? Is there anything big on the horizon? Not asking rhetorically, just wondering who might have some insight.

No that was me having to explain my stance to you because you jumped to the conclusion that I was defending Kinect out of some blind passion for anything microsoft.

The Wii has FPS that aren't rail shooters? If so this is news to me.
