Auto-fire really takes the integrity out of shmups, half the skillset is how fast you can hit the buttons.

I know that there are a bunch of games that have powered up shots that require you to charge up by holding the button down. If only these games were selected t might discourage people from using auto-fire.

Xpadder and similar programs wont register in our score mode. If you are determined enough and smart enough there is always a way to break a system but it is pretty difficult to get away with any cheating here.

I havent tried it myself and like you said if someone really wanted to, they could. Nice to know you got this locked down for the most part.

What do you guys think of having nes or tg16 caravan shootemup in the seeding rounds and then mame in the double elimination part

As I talked to wolfman... very nice idea this tournament. Very good to meet guys from other sites/rankings too. But don't forget to be "consistent" with the rules. Good luck!
Probably I'll not participate this time, but I suggest "no auto fire", "INP submissions" and agree with wolfman last suggestion.

I'm keen to join! I'm happy to be teamed with anyone, but they should know I'm not so great at shmups. I enjoy em though!

You could cheat with auto-fire if you use an external plug-in on your desktop or something.

You can set the fire intervals to make it much less obvious.

At least MARP editors have tools to easily detect auto-fire with high level of security. I think RU also has.
As far as I know, even if setting different intervals, or setting trying to camouflage auto-fire, in some seconds/minutes it may be detected.
The best tip is: "Don't try!"

Considering this tournament intends to be "for fun", the setting "no auto-fire" is the best choice, and I think anyone will play honestly.

I did some rough estimate today of the length of the contest with the number of players so far the longest the contest will run will be to april is everyone ok with that?

the four options for double eliminations is going to be
1.all teams in 1 bracket
2. all teams split in 2 brackets
3. all teams split in 4 brackets
4. set number of teams in 1 bracket

i am either going to go with option 2 or 3 since i am not a fan of 4

Do you have an idea of how to break them down and into a bracket? Would you be open to ideas on how to organize it? Double elimination is all the way is going to be really long. This is how I would do it.

1: Break down the players into 8 groups of 5 with the extra player going into a random group. So two brackets, pretty much like you would see in the World Cup, which is where I'm getting this from...
2: Select 8 different games and have each group play two different games.
3: The top two players from each group advance to the knock out rounds until there's a champion!

You could set a round per week, as to not overwhelm the Game Mods with the same freaking game submissions. Personally that was a pain in the ass to do...So yeah, that's what I would suggest. Though 32 players would be a better number for this format, 43 is doable.
