Re: In 40 years...
Of course humans aren't evil, I'm sure they'll see that there are good and
compassionate people on the planet. But, they wouldn't act with the
people, they'd act with the government. We'd just have to wait and see
what'd they'd do with the major governments. One thing they'd have to
consider is if they did introduce us with new technologies, how would it
affect the balance of power on our planet, one thing we have to consider
is how space will be divided, I mean we have laws saying no country can
own property off our planet.
It's extremely complicated, there's no easy way of determining things.
Actually, if you think about it, aliens would stay away because we'd just
infect each other with diseases we aren't used to. It'd be a very bad
idea in general from a biological standpoint, the amount of introduced
species could be huge. I'm not talking about thinks like dogs, but like
micro organisms like dust mites. They could cause huge problems.

An alien invasion to thin the population? I like it. Dean Koontz was a fan of the idea as well:
Actually, the aliens spared children and a chosen few "good" people to watch over the children.
The ending was kind of dumb though.

How can you be sure? If a giant mothership came into our orbit and decided to address the entire population of earth and ignore our leadership there's not much our governments can do. It's not like they'd risk an alien attack over being ignored, I hope.

Like any new technology it would be abused and misused plenty. But that's normal, we'd be fine unless it was some new weapon tech or something equally as dangerous. I don't see an alien race giving primitive people a way to destroy themselves like that but it's possible.

That's not a big concern imo. Space is ridiculously huge and so far we've seen no activity in our local neighborhood. I doubt any beings would contest our space unless they were aggressive. But then if they were that way we wouldn't be discussing borders with them anyways.
That law would be dropped in a heartbeat if we could leave and colonize planets. It's only in place to protect the moon from morons who would try to exploit it.

Very possible but if they were advanced enough to travel across these distances then it would make sense that they would have advanced medical technology and be prepared for it.
War of the Worlds was a stupid story because of that idea, those aliens apparently did no research on us. Same with the aliens in Signs. They didn't realize that being weak against water would effect them on a planet made of mostly water? It's not very well thought out.

Like I said above it would make sense that they would be prepared for this. But I agree it's hard to predict what will cause problems and the chances of something going bad are pretty good.
@DN- That is more believable than "god did it".

What makes you think they would provide technology to us? Have you never heard of the prime directive?

I have! True to human nature that rule has been violated tons of times. Kirk has at least 8 direct violations of it. Picard has about 5. It was pretty loosely followed on DS9 but then it became more strict in Voyager. Like I said typical humans.
I wasn't aware of that they have one for time travel too, Kirk violated that one like it was asking for it.

Re: In 40 years...
I blame flys.
I think flys have been sent by the aliens.
Flys are little tiny mobile cameras, just flying around, getting inside peoples houses, work places ect, monitering us with their little cameras.
I belive Flys land on our food and surfaces, not only to spread nastyness but to take samples of our food and building materials and ZAP them into space for the space fellas to study.
Flys in your living room? they are studying you, Recording your conversations to study language and human behavour. Sick of flys flying in your face? Ibet you are, they are doing an Iris scan on ya.
Yeah I dont like flys

Re: In 40 years...
To add to what DB has stated, what makes you think aliens would have our same values and morals?

I never said they'd have the same morals, I'm just being hypothetical.
Same thing with the technology.

1 is a bit far fetched really, because the earth governments would shoot first before asking questions, and possibly start a war, leading to #2 scenario. If the aliens did come under the guise of the#1 scenario, they would meet tanks, nukes, guns, bombs, its just the mentality of the human race.
|
Why? What makes you so sure humans would react with violence to something so monumental?
If anyone was to ruin our contact I think it would be religious people. Aliens would threaten their world view and make them lose members by the millions I bet. I could see some of them declaring war on aliens to keep their stranglehold on the world.

Re: In 40 years...
Flies are not alien spies, giraffes are. How many other creatures that live out of the ocean look so different from anything else.
Their horns have spheres on the tips. Their necks are extremely long, they have long, thin legs with large knees. Their pattern doesn't match anything that isn't man-made. I'm telling you, they are from another planet.

Besides, this face is clearly the face of an alien spy:

Re: In 40 years...
Giraffe faces look a lot like camel faces to me. It's just a weird horse.
I've heard people speculate that vase plants, fly traps and octopus are alien. I can believe that more because they're so strange compared to other species.
