a Petro Canada franchise owner who gained his 15 minutes of fame through The David Letterman Show that was doing a segment about ads in the paper, which then prompted Mr. Assman to have bumper stickers made which read:

It's not about being tough, it's about moving to a place that doesn't like you just because your from the US. You can't fight the whole country.

I know it is difficult, and I'd rather not fight an entire country, but I'd at least put up a good fight.

So instead of going to some stink hole where they hate people from the US you could do some research and find a tropical place that doesn't hate us. I think Guam fits that mold.

I've talked to people that visited Belize and they didn't mention extra hostility to US compared to anywhere else in the world. Just wear a canadian flag pin and start saying aye and 'bout.

The big pluses for New Zealand and Belize is you don't have to learn a new language and their tropical paradises.

Belize is about the size of California but has something like 8 times as many species as all 50 states combined. It has islands, beaches, jungles and Mayan ruins.

New Zealand has the highest ratio of quailty of life / cost of living in the world. Great weather, low pollution, islands, plus it looks just like Middle Earth.

Now that I know actual Canadians, those from Western Canada...Alberta, Manatoba, BC, they say "Eh?" all of the time. They also mispronounce bagel...saying "Bag-El", instead of "Bay-gull".

I don't know if I qualify as an 'actual' Canadian, being half Native, but I do not say 'eh' all the time, and then it's mostly when I'm joking about that whole saying 'eh' thing.
About is 'Ah - bout' {not BOOT}, Bagel is 'Bay - gul' {only ONE 'l'}, and so far as 'being Canadian' in the sense that I should somehow fit a stereotype and do and say certain things, I don't.

I often wonder what English people think of all this; even in the U.K. there seem to be different dialects.

So it gets me to wondering:
Exactly what is it that causes this phenomenon, and how did it begin?
What I mean is, how is it that a person can have a 'Newfoundland' or 'Native' or 'California' or 'Australian' {or any other English speaking group who speak in a particular way} accent, over such a long time and spanning generations?

Why do people from certain areas of the World speak in slightly uniform ways?

I don't know, but I have heard the theory that the American Southern accent was once much more widespread throughout the American colonies, the Boston/New England accent developed later.

I think I see what you're saying, that it comes as an accent from original Colonists, am I right?
For a lot of common accents I think that's likely to be the case.
In other cases {such as the New York City accent}

... and I know that there is no accent except to ears not from New York City, but that's exactly what I'm getting at.

I get the idea that at some point, somebody iconic began speaking in a certain way that people enjoyed or found amusing, and it caught on from there, in the way nicknames for places do.
What do you think?

Works for me, though I guess it doesn't have the magic of "You can't legally get here from the United States" like Cuba does.

Oh, and New Zealand looks like Middle Earth, because the Lord of the Rings movies were filmed there, if I remember correctly.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's why he said that about middle earth in the first place. I thought it was common knowledge that they filmed in NZ.

But yeah NZ does sound awesome. I hear the surfing there is great and the people are pretty nice. Also you'd be on the bottom of the world and far from any nukes that Palin might drop.
