uhm... ok... giving 1/3 of the money to everyone was supposed to get doesn't work because that would add up to more than 2000. So he gives 1/3 of what the first wife should have gotten, or 1/4 of the total estate... uhm...

This is messing with my brain. I don't think I'll get the right answer here, but I need to write this out.

The 1st wife got 1/3 of what she was promised and 1/4 of what was available.
The 2nd wife got 37.5% of what she was promised and available.
The 3rd wife got 1/4 of what she was promised and 37.5% of what was available.

I'm not sure why, but the judge decided to split the share between the 2nd and 3rd wife equally. Maybe he felt that was mathematically fair based on what the 1st wife received.

It is hard to give hints for this without giving the answer away but I will try.

In the true story, it was not a judge but a group of rabbis several thousand years ago. They didn't give there reasoning for the decision at the time and it became a president law. People continued to use this as a way to settle cases without knowing why they were doing it. They just thought it was a un-understandable rule that you followed like not mixing dairy and meat.

And then in 1985 a nobel prize winning game theorist explained why it is a fair distribution and everyone thought "Oh." and then went on with their lives.

so aside from saying that the first wife was the judge, i was correct, the first wife took the lesser amount that she wanted and the other 2 split the difference.
