I think it's good because some people(like myself) keep the forum page open and periodically check new posts while doing other stuff. I don't like leaving the actual chat window open unless I'm actively using it, laggy.

Why not have an "in chat" icon available like the one that lets us know who's online at the time? Or some sort of indicator that let's others know.

I totally agree with this idea. Currently, the only way to know who is chatting is if you login to chat. Lurkers like me prefer to know who's chatting before logging in. I mean the last thing I want is to get stuck in an awkward conversation with Tails.

An "in chat" icon would be cool, as I'm more inclined to log into to chat when I know for a fact that people are on. Maybe have a list on the front page, like the one that shows who's logged in.
