I hear you. Both games are kind of outdated now. I have a sentimental place in my heart for Kung Fu, though. I put it in the same class as Donkey Kong where it's the same thing over and over, but it holds nostalgic memories for me.

Re: The 20 Worst NES Games of All-Time
Total Recall is the only game one the list that is impossible to complete without cheating due to bad programming so it gets my vote.
Deadly Towers and Athena are favorites of mine and I also like Legend of Kage, Super Pitfall, and Renegade.

Agreed. Video games have become a media medium which should be afforded the same priviledges as film, television, print, internet, and radio. Nothing should taboo anymore.

I agree with that. I don't care if the game is based on Kung Fu Jesus beating up tax collectors, Budduh Rock (ala Chuck Rock only starring Budduh and his magical belly), or a basketball game starring Allah (Allah Oop anyone?). If the game is good I will play it. Censorship sucks in all forms.

Re: The 20 Worst NES Games of All-Time
While I agree censorship sucks, I don't think parents should use video games to trick children into having a specific viewpoint on religion, politics or whatever.
Ah well, so long as a game is good, it really doesn't matter what it is about.

Only misguided censorship "sucks". By misguided I mean censorship for the sake of censorship itself.

Re: The 20 Worst NES Games of All-Time
Censorship for the sake of censorship is bull. Some things that get censored with a "legitimate reason" don't even make sense. You can say the word 'crap' on television, but not another word with the same meaning and the same connotation.

That's a good example as it encompasses both good and bad forms of censorship.
In some cases it is censored only to appease FCC regulations. The FCC regulating what may be broadcast on public and private airwaves is strictly a bad form of censorship.
In most cases though, such as cable television, it is done with an effort to cast the widest net available to attract viewers. This is censorship via consumer purchasing power and is a good form of censorship.
RU forums falls in the later form as we are censoring ourselves by choice to obtain a wider market rather than being mandated to do so.

Re: The 20 Worst NES Games of All-Time
Did you guys hear about this?
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/14/bu...4indecent.html
A federal appeals court said-
Quote:
|
regulations barring the use of “fleeting expletives” on radio and television violated the First Amendment because they were vague and could inhibit free speech.
|
Quote:
|
The appeals court emphasized that it was not precluding federal regulation of broadcast standards. “We do not suggest that the F.C.C. could not create a constitutional policy,” the court said. “We hold only that the F.C.C.’s current policy fails constitutional scrutiny.”
|
And from a first amendment scholar-
Quote:
|
“This decision demands of the F.C.C. that it regulate with precision and not use general terms like ‘indecency,’ ”
|
It seems that people are sick of the vague and arbitrary rules set up by the FCC. Maybe this will have an effect on games as well.

I'm pretty sure that even if the FCC standards change, there will be some degree of censorship, the kind Ten describes as good, the kind for the purpose of having a larger audience, not strict mandated censorship.
The FCC is too extreme about their rules though.

Re: The 20 Worst NES Games of All-Time
This is a topic of the worst nes games and it doesn't even mention Hydlide? That has to be THE worst of them all, but maybe it's just so bad that nobody mentioned it on purpose.
Here's some gameplay:

I like how you can freely move, even if a bug screws you over. I like the every 2 levels new cheetahmen theme. Like the mario coin thing too.

Urban Champion for me. It's not on this list and I can't see why. It's pretty lame and boring...just a bunch of punching people and avoiding potted plants.
