FTW. The other versions are good but none come close to the perfect of the first.
I agree that MKwii is cheap because of the items. Any racing game that punishes you for doing well is missing the point. If you're way out in front all the time the game should try to match you people who are of equal skill(like on 360/PS3) not give the horrible players huge advantages. Still a great game besides that though.

The SNES version really, really doesn't stand the test of time. It's garbage. Just a sprite attached to a mode 7 background.
As for the blue shell, you can avoid them if you have a speed boost mushroom and time it right.

Re: Mario Kart 64
That's why 64's blue shell was the best, it tracked you on the ground not the air.

thing is, if you are in 1st place, all you get are green shells and bananas, almost never a mushroom.

yeah, items should be random. They should just make it rare for some items to come up.

Then the game will have no balance what-so-ever.

Meh chalk it up to nostalgia then. None of the sequels have given me the same enjoyment so far.
I've played MKwii enough to know that if you're in first you have a 99% chance of eating about five items and being knocked down to at least third. I wish it wasn't true but it is.

Re: Mario Kart 64
I know, I'm just saying. They shouldn't limit the obscurity of simple items when your ahead. Don't give crazy things like bullet bills in first. Just allow most other things.
Come to think of it, I don't think I ever remember seeing a blue shell in MK64... Guess I'm just too good.

DB: I call it the Suction. If you get caught in the lower numbers in mario Kart wii. Then you're stuck there.

Re: Mario Kart 64
Yeah, 64 and DD were better games because of their balanced gameplay.
@Tenser: Although Super Mario Kart is dated, it's still better than Sonic R.
Mario Kart 64 was going to be called Mario R until Sonic R came out first.

You know what i've noticed? When computers are in 1st, almost nothing hits them. But when your in 1st, you get demolished by every item out there.

That's 100% true.
It's like those AI's that race up front when they get too far behind.
They never stop annoying you.

What do you like about it?
I found it very cluncky and while normally nonlinearity makess things better,
it made Sonic R much more confusing. The graphics weren't that great either.

Re: Mario Kart 64
I don't know. It's just fun... I just like the idea for it, although your character skids like 50 feet before they turn. That is until I reaslised that you could use 'L' & 'R' to turn easily. Btw, you watch too much screwattack

I disagree, it's the only one of these games I actually got into.
I've never played the one for the N64, but I think graphic wise, the N64's early 3-D graphics don't stand up to the 16-bit 2-D graphics of the SNES. I didn't fancy the controls much either, so I assume I wouldn't play a great deal of it.

Trust me, if you liked Super Mario Kart, you will love Mario Kart 64.
The tracks, the music, the gameplay they all recieved drastic improvements.

Re: Mario Kart 64
I can't believe they rated Sonic R as the #1 worst sonic game, and Sonic Shuffle was #4 worst or something... Ah well. Sonic R was Good, not great, but good. Tails would agree.

Nah it's definitely a good game. The only one I didn't really like was Double Dash. It was fun but I think the idea was kind of stupid.

That game was pretty fun, but I didn't really like the "Two Drivers One Kart" feeling, hey someone could hit up the fetish market and make a movie out of it though.

True about the Rainbow Road.
The game was fun, I just didn't understand why two drivers did the job of one.

Re: Mario Kart 64
One person used items. Which made it more... well yeah, realistic, since the person in the back actually threw the item with his/her hand. As opposed to it just popping out of the back of the kart and flying forward.

Re: Mario Kart 64
I hate rainbow road so that's not a selling point for me. I did like the ability for one person to control the items so the other can focus on the race. Giving the second player the ability to shift the vehicle off course was a bad idea though.

You don't have to have 2 people to play though, I'm sure you know that, but still...
