Re: It's FOOTBALL not soccer!
I hate soccer and I hate people using the term "gridiron" or "American" for our version of football. It's ours and we'll call it what ever we want to. Hence, the National Football League.

The question was why is it called Soccer. I went to the quickest source and provided the answer. I don't understand how you being annoyed by it being called soccer has anything to do with wikipedia being right.

hmmm...I must admit you make an very good point. My question was, why is it called soccer? Wikipedia does state that it's used as a nickname in the US, but it also states that it's formal name is football. I guess I just don't like it being called soccer. yeah that sentence was a bit odd now that I read it again. ummm..what does imo mean?

Hahaha, nice.
Garbage, trash, rubbish, waste... I wonder how long it will be before colloquialisms make it so we can't understand anyone outside our own country.

No. In USA/Canadia soccer is soccer and football is football. Why is this so irritating to you? Do you often find yourself overseas and being confused when a discussion of football arises?

Where I come from we laugh at people who call it pop. It's offtopic but I felt the need to chime in about this.

It's the weirdest thing. I have lived all over the U.S., and some people call it pop and some call it soda (I guess it's all derived from the term Soda Pop any way). Growing up I got tired of the back and forth change, so I just started calling everything non-alcoholic, Soft Drinks.

First of all it's not irritating to me, it's annoying. Secondly I wouldn't be confused overseas, because I'll know exactly to what sport they are refering to when football is mentioned.
Why are YOU so irritated about people calling it american football or gridiron Football?

It's not quite that simple. You see, thousands of years ago, their lived a great race of people who lived in the land known as the Sodinian Populsas. Unfortunately, the land's only two cities grew poor trade, and their languages slowly altered. Eventually, anger and feud grew between the people of the cities, and the land was parted into two, the land of Soda, and the land of Pop. Anyone who dare spoke the name of the rivaling country was looked down upon. And to this day, the decendents of these cities still despise each other.

Wow, and here I thought that the animosity was rooted in leftover sentiments from the Cold War era when Soda Popinski was both revered and reviled for his exploits in the ring.

Funny you should mention him, for I was about to de-rail the thread further by tell you the legend of the rising oracle who would return peace and defeat the evil mac and cheese. Unfortunately, the legend turned out to be false when his real name turned out to be Vodka Drunkinski.

Re: It's FOOTBALL not soccer!
In Texas I grew up calling everything coke. Mountain Dew, Sprite, Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, Root Beer and Coca-Cola were all cokes. I forced myself to switch to the word soda.
My school banned a game we called "smear the queer". One person had a ball. Everyone else tried to tackle that person. When you were tackled you would throw the ball and someone else pick it up and run. Repeat. The goal was to avoid being tackled as long as possible. I was pretty good at it. I loved it. So much more fun than football and soccer.
We weren't allowed to play so we would sneak off the playground and play in the football field.
A few stories about it.
- I got hit in the junk hard enough to black out. When I woke up my vocal chords were stripped and I couldn't talk.
- I got a big cut on my eyebrow. We didn't want the teachers to know so 20 guys circled around me, hid me in the crowd and snuck me into the bathroom while we tried to clean it up and stop the bleeding. We eventually realized the bleeding wasn't going to stop. They all disappeared and I went to the principles office. He didn't ask what happened, just called my parents who didn't answer and then he drove me to the hospital for stitches.
- A new kid was playing. I went to tackle him and grabbed his chest from behind and slammed him to the ground pretty hard. While grabbing his chest I realized that he was a very manly looking 12 year old girl. Apparently I was the only one who hadn't realized because everyone was staring speechless with their mouths open.
Another game we played once... Our wrestling room was padded and had no windows. We turned off all the lights and had a royal rumble. Ten, 14 year old boys, in pitch black, wrestling. One kid was on his knees trying to stand up while another ran full speed and accidently kneed him in the face breaking his nose. I got body slammed and had a nerve pinched and could barely use my left arm for a month. We agreed with the coach, that was a stupid game and we never spoke of it again.

Re: It's FOOTBALL not soccer!
Ahh Smear the queer. We played that as well. That was such a great game. I never had any brutal things happen to me like that, but once me and one other guy tackled this kid, and flew onto the asphalt, which gave me some nasty scrapes, but the kid that got tackled had gross road rash all on his knuckles, forarms, and elbows. I stopped playing that game for a while after that and starting playing marbles and handball.

Re: It's FOOTBALL not soccer!
One of my favorite game was King of the dock at the lake, we'd swim out to this dock like 50 ft away from the shore. It was simple enough, you'd get like 10 people and try and stay on the longest. You could come back on as much as you wanted, the dock was very wobbly when someone fell off.

Because it already has a common name where I live. I don't see any point in 300 million Americans adjusting their speech because a handful of people dislike it. Seems a tad unreasonable, doesn't it?
I remember playing smear the queer growing up as well. It wasn't that often though. The two big ones when I was in middle school was slap boxing and bloody knuckles.
@Kong: Did you tackle her like that again? I would have.
