Re: Favorite Books...

Nope never read that book. Funny thing is I usually can't get through sci fi books but I love the movies. I think I need to see it for some reason.

Fantasy movies like Star Wars.

Morte D'Arthur (Death of Arthur) is one of the more famous King Arthur books out there. It's in old English, but if one can sift through it it has many a rousing tale in it.

The last book I read was Mark Twain's [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mysterious_Stranger"]The Mysterious Stranger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]. It was the last book he wrote and was never finished and published after his death. The first 75% is really good. The ending is abrupt and unfocused.

The devil scene from The Adventures of Mark Twain (1985 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia is loosely based on this book. If you like claymation then you have to watch this movie.

Kong you seem to be obsessed with the same authors as my older brother. He goes on about Richard Feynman all the time and he made me read Thomas Covenant. He also gave me the God Delusion to read. I think you guys would get along great.

Re: Favorite Books...

I forgot to mention a few really good horror authors.
Bentley Little
Christopher Pike
Ramsey Campbell
John Coyne
Clive Barker

I don't know if I would consider her horror or not but I really enjoyed the Mayfair Chronicles by Anne Rice. I haven't finished them because I've been having a hard time finding the last book in the series but if you love to read, pick up The Witching Hour, Lasher, and Taltos. Taltos is the last one that I haven't been able to find but if it's anywhere near as good as the first two, you're in for a treat.

Re: Favorite Books...

I am currently reading Miles To Go. It is memoirs written by Miles Davis' former roadie/road manager. It is very good, if you are into that.

My favorites include:

Battle Royale - Koushun Takami
What Is The What - Dave Eggers
Metamorphosis - Franz Kafka
American Psycho - Bret Easton Ellis
And of course, the Wu Tang Manual

read On the Road and Catcher in the Rye and I thought they were terrible. I also read enough about Lolita(and saw the movie) to know the story and I don't think it was very good either.
It seems weird that 2/3 you mentioned deal with underage sex in a creepy way.
Btw Catcher in the Rye inspired that loser to shoot John Lennon, that's enough to hate the book imo.

Fahrenheit 451 was a great book though.
1. I do know that "Catcher In The Rye" does have some things that most people can not handle to read like underage sex but that does not bother me am not some sick pervert trying not to sound mean I like reading banned books and that it cause john lennon to be shot but I don't think it did the guy who killed him was a crazy psychotic fan who hated Lennon.

2. With the book "Lolita" as I said some can not handle reading certain things hopefully you don't look at my different cause I like these books that it does not make me weird in any way.

3. "On The Road" loved that book all of these books I spent my time in the library for hours reading books out of all of these there my favorite.

Another favorite book of mine.

Re: Favorite Books...

I personally love graphic novels, non-fiction, fiction, and sci-fi. I love the entire "Series of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket and "Dramacon" an awesome graphic novel about a girl at Comic-Con but I've only read the first one cuz I can't find the rest at the libraries I go to.

Actually I meant On the Road when I said 2/3 of the books had underage sex(he relates a story about having sex with a 13yo mexican prostitute/sex slave). Catcher in the Rye wasn't inappropriate I thought it was just very overrated and boring.

I don't think you're weird for liking these books, they are considered classics after all. I just wanted to know why you seemed to like stories with that theme.

The guy said this book inspired him to shoot lennon for some stupid reason. I'm not blaming the book directly but it caused this loser to shoot and kill a great man. I think that's at least part of my resentment towards it.

I can understand where you're coming from, but if it wasn't that book it would have been something else.

Off topic slightly, but as you know I am a big fan of Stargate SG-1. A couple of years back I heard a story about a teen in England (I think it was there anyway) who stabbed and killed his younger sister while watching SG-1. He said that the Stargate kept beckoning him to kill her so he did.

All I am saying is that crazies will always find some type of catalyst to spur them on to do something crazy. Wasn't the guy who shot President Reagen obsessed with Jodie Foster or something?

Re: Favorite Books...

Funny you mention Hinkley, I also heard he was inspired by A Catcher in the Rye but I couldn't find a reliable source so I left it out. He was obsessed with Foster and as a desparate act he tried to shoot Reagan to become world famous(so he'd be on Fosters level). Also worth noting is how he fell in love with her from Taxi Driver, which makes him just that much creepier.

I know what you mean about crazies finding a reason to do things. I just hate the fact that Lennon is dead and that loser is alive and not even in jail. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity, he went to a mental hospital with very loose rules, even had unsupervised visits to his parents before he got caught with Jodie Foster contra band.
I think they should've just put a bullet in his head and saved all that money they wasted on his worthless exsistence. Why do we care what happens to people like this? He shot lennon in the back like a coward. It's been a while but I think he even got an autograph first and lennon was very nice to him. Obviously this makes me angry so I'll just stop ranting here.

That is pretty creepy about the whole Taxi Driver thing. Yikes! Maybe we could get Tenser's input on this particular portion of the topic.

I hear you. It sucks that some of the more peaceful people are the ones taken out. I saw a Carlin routine once where he said something to the effect of humanity lets all the military dictators and crazies live, but kills all of the peaceful people. He said we kill people like Ghandi, Lennon, Jesus, Budduh, and the like because they are all talking about how we should get along, live in peace, and love people.
I think there is some truth to that as weird as that is.

Yeah, I strongly believe that we have certain great people that we need to improve/enlighten our society. When we lose them too soon we hurt humanity as a whole and the damage is long lasting.

I am not a religious man but stuff like this (the murder of lennon) makes me believe evil is real and is working against us all the time.

I agree completely. I think Ghandi really was another one. He was completely peaceful, but they killed him anyway. Crazy!

I know what you mean. I definitely have seen enough in my life to believe evil is real too. I guess that's why we need more good people that will be willing to put themselves out there. Maybe if enough do, there will be some change on our old planet.

Re: Favorite Books...

Yeah Ghandi was another sad loss. His death was meaningless in a way but it did make his cause more mainstream(death does that for some reason). I'd rather he lived but we can't have nice things because it's too easy for some nutjob to end a life for no real reason.

The problem with good people is they get killed too much. Some crazy, evil people fear change and they attack anything that looks like it might cause that to happen.

Btw we've gone off topic again, I think we should stop this here so we don't ruin an otherwise good topic.

Btw I forgot to mention that my mother always reads about famous crimes, that's how I read about Mark David Chapman and his murder of Lennon. I hated him before but the book amplified it.

---------- Post added at 04:45 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:16 AM ----------

I just thought of one I forgot, The Wheel of Time series. Some people hate it but I think it's a great epic fantasy. It's a damn shame the author died during the last book although he supposedly had notes ready for the guy who took over.

Re: Favorite Books...

I've read most of the Wheel of Time series. I started when I was 17. The first few books were really good fantasy. By the time I was 25 I had read 9 of them and there was still no end in sight and they kept getting longer and slower and more repetitious. I do not recommend reading WoT. It has a strong start but you will regret it by the time it is over.

The Dangerous Lives of Alter Boys is great. The movie is OK. But you should read the book. It is a short easy read.

Re: Favorite Books...

So you don't mind reading about a character tugging their braid an average of once every 10 pages. Some times 3 times on a single page. Or any of the other repetitive OCDs that all the characters have.

About it being an acquired taste I disagree. It is like being fed stake. At first most people enjoy it. But then you are given the same stake over and over for 30,000 pages and you start to realize it is all meat from the same cow that was killed 10 years ago and it is starting to taste really old and chewy and you can hardly swallow it anymore.

Re: Favorite Books...

I know what you mean about the useless repeatitive ticks characters have but I got used to it and just skipped over it as I read. It had it's bad points but when it was good it was really worth it, imo of course.
For the record I'm not claiming it to be my favorite out of all the books I've read but I still think it's worth reading.
