Having done some traveling between Western Europe and the States, I would think your biggest concern would be your criminal record. If your record isn't serious and you're planning on getting a tourist visa it may not be a big deal. However, if your record is more serious and/or you're going to try and get a work visa you may have a lot of paperwork to fill out and spend a lot of time waiting.

Other than that, it comes down to your preferences. Typically the bigger the city, the more there is to do, the more money it costs to do it, and the longer it takes to get there.

Sez when I said that I was mad and trying to prove a point. Not everyone in the south is like that. The majority of people I've met from those states are very nice and pretty normal. That being said there is still a lot of racism down there. Also there is a lot of religious turmoil down there too.
In the north east we do have a lot of bitter, uptight know it alls but it's not everyone. People are people wherever you go.

The thing MJ said about low rent is due to the area. No offense but not many people wanna move to the midwest. You're gonna pay more to live in an area that's highly populated(like New York, notice Tenser left out the going rent? I didn't). Ohio isn't bad but you might find it boring.

Also you asked how much you'd need to get started. From my experiences you'll need first and last months rent and most likely a security deposit. So if the rent is around 450 you'll need somewhere over 1k to get started. If it's New York it might be more like 2-3k.

@Kong- Hawaii is awesome but there isn't a lot of jobs there from what I hear. That and it must be expensive.

Michigan (metro Detroit) has really great people, a thriving night life, reasonable prices for housing (400-600 for a decent studio or 1 bedroom apartment... maybe a lil more certain areas), fun stuff to do winter or summer.

BUT.... Jobs are far and few between right now. Last I checked, Michigan's unemployment rate was almost 13% which was the highest of the states. Probably more crime then the norm (especially Detroit city) but as long as you don't poke your nose where you shouldn't things should be fine.

I'm sure there are some crummy places to live near the intersection of Vernor and Springwells.... lots of juggalo's too.
