People with Star Trek avatars are involved in the forum game about it. It's not required it's just for fun. Also it helps us keep track of who's what character.

Well it was intentional so you're right. Each show has a character with a similar personality(or lack of one). Gene Roddenberry seemed to like the "straight man" vs the macho Kirk type. Imo Riker fills that role on TNG but he's doesn't act like a scumbag. It gives them a chance to have an oblivious, innocent character dealing with these strange humans.

See I have to disagree somewhat. I agree that Roddenberry tried to have a similar dynamic, but for me my biggest complaint with STTNG is that I never felt that the characters were ever as close as they were in TOS. I like the stories in TNG, but I just think that all the characters eventually took a back seat to Picard and Data, and Riker just kind of went into the background too. Also, as much as I think Picard and Data were great the characters just didn't have the same spark in the relationship area somehow. Don't get me wrong, I still love STTNG, but the holy trinity of Trek (Kirk, Spock, McCoy) is just tough to top. To be fair, until the original crew Trek movies, the other characters didn't get much development either, but the relationship between the three was so tight, it worked for me. Plus, I really liked the coolness that was Kirk. He could be very tough when he needed to be, compassionate, and smart all rolled into one hero. I really like Picard too, but I really didn't care as much about any of the characters in TNG except for Data and to some extent, Worf.

That being said, TNG is still one of the best Sci-Fi shows ever made and smokes about anything on T.V. today. And, I have watched (and continue to watch) the episodes over and over.

@Tenser- btw I forgot, Data and Spock are similar but there is a big difference. Spock has emotions. His social interactions were much different than data. Data is curious like a child and almost completely oblivious of subtle things we take for granted. He is constantly inserting his foot into his mouth. Spock was smooth and calculating.
Just thought I'd tell you that.

@Winnebagel- When I said Riker fills the role I meant his similarities to Kirk. Mainly the whole ladies man thing but also how he is usually the one to correct data about humanity, Picard does too but usually because he's frustrated with him. Now that I think of it that's like McCoy and Spock

Either way I understand your point. Kirk and them were more casual with each other, as you'd expect old friends to be. But, they also didn't act like the crew of a flagship.
I liked TNG because everything was more realistic. Would they really send a smarmy man-whore to be earths representative to the galaxy? Kirk is cool and all but you gotta admit his character is over the top. The TNG crew trys to fit our known reality I think. Everything seems more professional from TNG on. I think that's why I prefer it.

To me comparing these two shows is like comparing the 60s Batman with The Dark Knight movies. It's just not possible since they're so different. Same story but different ways of telling it I guess. Only problem with that is Star Trek treats all the shows as part of the storyline. 60s Batman is not canonical, thankfully.

I see what you mean. I really like both shows, but I find some aspects of each show realistic and others not (to me). For example, I like the pioneering aspect in TOS and some of the rugged nature of making it up as they went along seems cool to me. The rulebook didn't always apply which I think speaks true to life often times. However, in TNG I agree that there is a more professional nature to everything. Also, because the galaxy is more or less at peace there is a bit less bravura and hubris needed I think.

Roddenberry said he patterned Captain Kirk and TOS very much off of Horatio Hornblower, and I can kind of see that in the sense that there is always the unknown and not knowing what one would encounter, but I think TNG probably does speak more to today's world in that the majority of nations more or less get along, and there aren't constant wars between rival nations like there were back in the days of major ship trade.

Sometimes I think TNG comes off a bit too utopian for my tastes (just because it seems a little far out), but I still love the series. I have to admit when I saw "Best Of Both Worlds" when it originally aired I could not wait for the conclusion. It was amazing! Overall I think that both series offer different perspectives, but both are great in their own way. I'm glad they both exist. I say let's enjoy the original canon while it lasts before J.J. Abrams blows it all to hades.

I'll just add that I agree with both Dudebro and Winnebagel (how's that for diplomacy) regarding the whole TOS vs. TNG discussion. Both shows have their own valid place in Star Trek universe. ...And Winnebagel, don't even get me started on the conceited JJ Abrams, who thinks he can do a better job with Roddenberry's creation than Roddenberry did.
