Re: Final Fantasy
And why do these games have to be so depressing? EVERY GAME someone either dies or gets their life ruined.

Re: Final Fantasy
speaking of which, why is Aeris's death so popular? I think that Zack's death was more depressing.

It gives them an excuse to exude massive amounts of emo-ness.

I see, but why sad over Aris? That scene wasn't sad, it was hilarious.

Re: Final Fantasy
I was upset, at the time Aerith was my highest level character.
I also heard that My Chemicle Romance will be doing the soundtrack for FF13.

It's because most stories(video games included) have a formula. Pretty much every story has been done before in a million different ways.
It's like how Disney movies usually kill off a parent(or have them totally absent) to make it more dramatic(Bambi anyone?).
Personally I'm disappointed with most rpg stories. It's usually a super powerful bad guy who wants to destroy/rule the world and you're the unassuming nobody who rises up to accept the challenge. Yawn.
It's not an RPG but Command and Conquer red alert for PS1(I think) had a cool story. Time travel is invented by Einstien, he goes back and kills hitler before he comes to power. When he returns to present day the balance of power in the world changed drastically. I loved it.

Yeah this always bugged me too. Are they more dead then normal or something? Makes no sense to have a spell and an item to resurrect people but they don't work in very specific situations? BS.

Re: Final Fantasy
phoenix downs can't cure extroadinarily fatal wounds, just knock outs or near-fatal wounds. Get slashed across the chest, maybe you could be revived, across the neck, not so much.

Says who?
How about a party member dieing to Ultima and you're able to revive them easily? That seems deadlier than a slice to the throat.

Re: Final Fantasy
I think that the fact that you are sometimes able survive ultima pretty much proves the point that it's less painfull than a sword through the back. Though, why can you get shot in a battle and survive but then die by getting shot in a cutscene?
RE4 gameplay: pitch-forked, burned, cross-bowed', knifed, and bathed in acid-a flesh wound
RE4 cutscene: thrown at a closet-K.O.
quick example, but I wish I could think of one better than RE4 right now.

That's a good point. But we all know characters seem to get weaker during dramatic cutscenes.

Re: Final Fantasy
Actually, don't most of the FF games consider the character "fainted" or "fallen" when they reach 0 hit points? I also don't remember a phoenix down description saying it brings a character back from the dead. More like it removes the fainted status or revives a character.

Re: Final Fantasy
that was always my understanding of it. only in ff1 are they truely dead until you bring them back, in all of the other games, they are "fainted" for the remainder of the battle, after which, they have 1 hp, meaning alive.
the one bit of confusion i would have with fenix downs and restoring life would be using it on undead enemies (the phantom train in ff6 for example) you win the battle because you restore them to life? i always find it more enjoyable to chainsaw or drill zombies with edgar anyways.

I think you will really enjoy the story I am writing for my game...
its not done yet but I will let you read it when it is if you want just let me know
but I am trying to avoid things that have been done before as much as possible and throwing curveballs at the plots
but the most important aspect is that the player will truely control the story.
your actions WILL directly affect the future and not like fable where its the same story you just look evil. If you play evil the world will become a rotting filth
if you play good the world MAY come out good but it might not
...

I'm not trying to find realistic storytelling in video games, just pointing out how inconsistent it can be sometimes.
I'd be more than happy to read your story Oasis. I'm glad to hear you're avoiding cliche plots but don't go overboard. The reason we see the same storylines all the time is people like them.

Re: Final Fantasy
Yeah don't mind me I had to get up early and have dental work done. I'm not normal today. Sitting there for an hour while he cleaned around a nerve traumatized me.
I guess what I was trying to say is it doesn't matter anyways since the they change the rules when it suits the story all the time.
