Or a Real Time Strategy game.
The key thing people are missing is the actual playing of a role. If you don't make any personal choices for your character then you're just following a set path, much like an adventure game.

Re: What's your favorite rpg.
Dudebro's right. Also, games like Zelda II, Castlevania II, and Battle of Olympus have experience points, hit point, and levels.
If anything, Dragon Warrior 1 is an Adventure game. It just happens to have an RPG-style combat system.

Re: What's your favorite rpg.
I think DW1 was called an rpg because at the time it was. It was one of the first rpgs on a console. They didn't have the benefit of hindsight like we do.
I'm not sure but wasn't Zelda1 released as an rpg?
What's funny to me is Dragon Crystal for GG is an RPG by tensers description. I'm sure most people wouldn't agree with that.

Re: What's your favorite rpg.
Dragon Crystal is a Dungeon Crawler - despite the fact of no dungeons anywhere in the game. Just like there is over lap in RPG and RTS mentioned above, there is overlap in RPG and Dungeon Crawler. They are still different.
RPG - playing a role, pretending to be a someone else that has choices. Derived from traditional RPG games like D&D. Example Buck Rodgers Count Down to Dooms Day.
Adventure - Less emphasis on action and button pushing. Sit back, take your time and explore and solve puzzles. Similar to RPG but without the role playing. Often have linear stories. Out of This World, The Immortal, Zelda, Dragon Warrior I.
RTS - Turn based games. Similar to RPGs but little exploring and story. Just fight after fight. Advanced Military, Dune II and Shining Force.
Dungeon Crawler. - Similar to RPGs but little story and few NPCs. Just explore and explore hunting for new items and killing monsters along the way. Dragon Crystal, Fatal Labyrinth, NetHack and Rogue.
Often times people call all of the above RPGs. If doing so then you are using the word very loosely and should at least call them RPG/RTS or RPG/Adventure or RPG/Dungeon Crawler.

Re: What's your favorite rpg.
Chrono Trigger is an RPG. Choose your team, different equipment have different abilities, you have the ability to manipulate ability stats.
I see "Dungeon Crawler" as more of a theme than a genre.

Re: What's your favorite rpg.
Dungeon Crawlers are kind of like RPG-Lite. Take an RPG and then throw out all the dialog and story and your left with a DC. I guess that could be a type of RPG instead of its own new category.

There's always exceptions. Starcraft/Warcraft are story based RTS games. The campaigns are full of characters, events and a continous story line.
Now that I think of it Warcraft(not WoW) could be considered an RPG. You play a character through the story. You have to make choices about abilities and gear. It really does play out like an RPG, it just has cool RTS battles.
Sticking with the same company how would you guys label Diablo? Most people call it a RPG but I've heard plenty of people against that.
Dragon Crystal is more of an RPG than DW1.

Probably Action/Adventure. Diablo reminds me mostly of Gauntlet, to tell the truth.

Diablo has exploring(limited), choice of abilities, choice of gear and continuous storyline. Sounds like an RPG to me.

Re: What's your favorite rpg.
the first diablo is definately a dungeon crawler, the second one, i would lean more towards rpg because the customization of the character goes into a lot more depth, kinda. but as for dragon warrior, for it's time, it was an rpg, one of the first ones if i remember correctly, at least for a console. it may not be perfect but it is in fact an rpg.
i forgot the point of this post, as did most of you, IMO the best rpg on this site is probably FF3 on the SNES. Or maybe Final Fantasy 5, i've been playing that one and I must say it is pretty good.

Oh yeah? Smackdown vs Raw lets you choose weapons and armor? It lets you complete quests for npcs and fight big boss fights?
I know it lets you assign stats but can you level up and choose where to put those stats after character creation?
I'm really starting to think you guys have never played diablo. I'm not trying to say it is an RPG I'm just pointing out how it fits the definition. Imo it fits better than DW1 and most people have no trouble calling that an RPG.
I'm still waiting for Tenser to explain how it's arcade/pinball btw.

Its called sarcasm, DB. I've never played Diablo. That being said, to assist you lets point this out; a dungeon-crawler is an RPG. Bard's Tale, Swords & Serpants, Might & Magic, and Wizardry are all RPGs.
@justin: Its fine if you label the first Dragon Warrior as an RPG because 99% of everyone accepts it is. Just as long as you understand, even for its time period, it wasn't.
