Re: What is YOUR favourite Game Console?
N64 was just an awkward transition to the future of game graphics. Things couldn't stay 2d forever. For what they had to work with I think they did alright. I have some fond memories of a few N64 games and if I could get used to playing them with a keyboard I'd be playing them on here a lot. Without that crazy controller things just don't make sense.

Re: What is YOUR favourite Game Console?
@DB, I have a semi-comfortable working setup for N64 games.
Analog stick is on the numberpad: 8, 4, 5, 6 for up, down, left, right, respectively. D-pad is the arrow keys, A and B are Z and X, L and R are A and S, and Z is C. The c-buttons are the only buttons I haven't found a comfortable setup for yet, I currently have them mapped to Home, Delete, End, and Page Down.

Wrong, for a system to be good, it needs to be diverse, and cater to all gamers needs. In that respect, N64 failed triumphantly.
|
Well, I wouldn't say the N64 was completely bad. It did offer some okay games, like Super Mario 64, OoT, Mario Kart 64, Super Smash Bros. Did you know that it also had an Adapter to play GameBoy games? Like the Super GameBoy on the SNES, but smaller, and plugs into the controller. Speaking of the controller, I HATE the design of the N64 controller! Was Nintendo high during development? Also, quick question: I might sound like a total "noob" here, but how do you change your profile picture?

I'm not saying it didn't have any good games. There were a handful of, pretty much exclusively first party games, that were great games. But that's not enough to save the system from being a failure.
I was not aware of the Super Gameboy type adapter, but you can't really put it in the "pro" column since it was never actually released to the public.

Emphasis mine.
I see how we got mixed up though and I was unaware of the Wide Boy 64. Thanks for sharing the link with me.

Re: What is YOUR favourite Game Console?
2-XL Talking Robot Emulator <-- I made that.
Obviously it ranked so high on my list purely for nostalgia. It blew my mind away when I was 7. I'd dress it up as a cowboy and put country western tapes in it. If you have young children (5-7) they might still like it. Maybe.

N64 is my least favorite system because to me it marks the point when gaming abandoned me. It was when a trip to Toys R Us with $50 in my pocket changed from magic to disappointment over night. I still hold a grudge.
Are you saying there is something inaccurate in that statement?
There was a couple decent games on N64 though. I played and enjoyed Ready 2 Rumble and Jeopardy 64 a lot.

Re: What is YOUR favourite Game Console?
What exactly do you think I am exaggerating about? I have pretty much just said 2 things. N64 marks a point on the timeline of my life when gaming abandoned me and because of that it is my least favorite system. You find that hard to believe?

Re: What is YOUR favourite Game Console?
I wouldn't say Tails is out of touch with the current gen. He owns a PS3, Wii, 3DS, and PSP I believe. Just because he has a preference or two to genres that are no longer the "it" thing doesn't make him out of touch.
Now that I think about it, neither am I. My household holds a Wii, a Wii-U, a 360, and three 3DS. I also read a lot of gaming news as my RSS feed reader sends me anywhere from 100-200 gaming articles a day. Not just Nintendo stuff either.
Anyways, back on topic. N64 sucked, so did the Game Cube. Not because they were bad systems but they lacked a deep games library. Mario 64 is hugely overrated, as is Ocarina of Time.
N64 marked the era where developers abandoned the basics and fundamentals to latch on to the "next big hype".

That is an exaggeration, opinion or not. If you were able to play more games you'd enjoy them. It's not that they're not fun.
The part about poorly implemented is moot after the n64 really.
The bottomline is I'm just tired of people making sweeping generalizations about modern games. They only focus on graphics, they aren't as fun, the community is terrible, ect ect. It's a bunch of crap. I know RU is one of the worst places to look for a fair appraisal of modern gaming but it's still annoying.

Well BD at least you can take solace in the fact that it seems like 90% of gamers think the N64 is the best system ever.

You left out the first part of my quote. I said "... for me it marks the end of fun games..."
When I look back on game history, N64 is where my passion died. I hold a grudge against N64 for that. You can, and most people do, disagree with my opinion that N64 ruined gaming but you can't prove that I don't believe it killed my interest in nearly all gaming from then to now. Which is the only point I have tried to make.

I agree BUT the previous generations did the same thing. The 16-Bit wars latched onto hype just as hard. The difference was the leap from 2D to 3D was more awkward and difficult for developers than any other gaming leap so they naturally made more mistakes and game play sacrifices.
I don't have much experience with motion controls but I bet they are going through a similar awkward experience.
I've played about 10 Wii motion control games for 5 minutes each. They all sucked hard. Except Punch Out. I played it with the surfboard for 8 hours straight. Amazing game and surprisingly good work out.
Anyone have a 2-XL, 3DO or TG-16 back in the day?
3DO was pretty quirky. They were one of the first CD systems which was also a very clumsy leap for developers and caused lots of game play sacrifice. But they had some really great Laser Disk style games that I was really into back then.
Actually the CD leap might have been even worse than the 3D leap at the beginning and the attempt to create virtual reality was so poor that it was just abandoned entirely. I remember in the 90s companies promising VR but no one ever delivered.

Re: What is YOUR favourite Game Console?
Generalizing a bit, but one of, if not the most important factor in the N64's poor performance was the fact they stuck with cartridges. All the best 3rd party developers went with the CD based PS.
"The mass exodus to Sony was huge. Everyone and their dog began making PSX games. Nintendo and Sega's response? To get more ruthless with their ideals. "Deal with us only, or suffer!" Well, that was it. The developers weren't coming back. In 1996, so many people wanted to make PSX games that Sony limited the market to 150 titles that year as the installed base wasn't that high and they wanted everyone to make money. (oddly enough, the really bad games that didn't make the cut ended up on the Saturn, which explains the exceptionally bad games for the Saturn that year. Plus, it damaged the image that Saturn had too as all the "exclusive" games on it really bit.)"

Re: What is YOUR favourite Game Console?
I left it out on purpose because we're obviously talking about opinion. It was to get right to the point of my contention not to cherry pick.
I get that it's your personal feeling but it's not fair to all the fun games that have come out since n64. That's why I called it an exaggeration.
Btw there's lots of good 2d games in recent times, you should check those out more. Gaming hasn't gotten worse it just changed.
We had the 2xl and I remember thinking it was the bees knees as a kid. Long time ago though and the memories are blurry.
A friend had 3do and it was awesome. One of my all time favorite games was on there, Star Control 2. Other versions exist but none had the polish and detail. That Horde game was cool too even though it starred Kirk freakin Cameron.

This is absolutely true. In fact, you remind me that so many of them are PC exclusive. I'm going to go ahead and just consider the PC a console on those grounds.
PC.

Re: What is YOUR favourite Game Console?
End point:
people enjoy things we don't enjoy, we enjoy things people don't enjoy, end of discussion. There are no facts, except for the fact that Virtual Boy was a failure of a system and that gaming is fun, no matter who you are and where you come from.

1 Word. Rare. Enough said, best company to ever grace the industry back then in my opinion.
Not going to bother arguing that it's a good console, because in a lot of ways, most of its games aged horrendously. I still love at least a dozen or two of them though, which makes it great for me. I agree on the fact that there was a major focus on graphics then, but not to all companies, giving a nod to Rare, who ironically made at the time, the best SNES game graphically in DKC, but also a fun game. Quality company.
Can I just say Rare is my favourite console :P No, that doesn't work, does it.
Anyways...
Snes > Gamecube > N64
Love all 3 though. I think if I were to add the rest that I've played enough to rank, it would look like this:
Snes
Gamecube
N64
Xbox
NES
GBA
3DS
GBC
Beyond that, I like games on other consoles like Ps2, but nothing entices me enough to add the consoles to my list.
