NHL going back to Winnipeg and Quebec City? - Page 2

The Thrashers have been sold to True North Sports pending approval from the NHL board of governors. They need 75% approval for the sale to go through and a majority approval for them to move.

Assuming both pass(which is likely) the Thrashers will move to Winnipeg this coming season. Initial reports are they will still be in the Eastern Conference(for 1 year if true).

The Jets is probably not going to be used, most expect them to take the name Manitoba Moose, which is the name of the AHL team they will be replacing.

Of course the Jets isn't going to be used... the owners of the Coyotes still own the Jets name.

Really happy if this goes through. I want them to be the Jets though, just personally what I'd like. Moose doesn't seem suitable for an NHL team somehow idk...

On another note, Winnipeg definitely deserves it, last I heard their attendance annually for the AHL Moose games is always way higher than any other AHL team. I think the Manitoba Moose games even generate way more fans than some NHL teams such as the Coyotes, or the wild (hence the move). That's just what I remember hearing though, but I believe it.

I'm happy for the jets.

As for Quebec, I no longer think they deserve a team since they would expect Canada to pay for them to build a rink and they wouldn't do it themselves. Winnipeg payed for their own rink, so did Vancouver, Calgary Edmonton and probably just about every other team in the league. Edmonton is funding their own money currently to build a new rink again. I know that because I was there when it was confirmed. Anyway, if Quebec wants a team back, hopefully they'll fund themselves :-/

Kind of curious about something though. Anyone I've talked to in New York and California don't care about hockey... Sow why does New York house 4 teams and why does California house 4 teams as well? Doesn't add up. I've got to say it would probably be nice to live there being that games are probably pretty cheap. I'm not doubting the fans there, I'm sure they have them, but it's probably only a select few. Not sure about the fans in either city, that's why I'm curious, maybe I'm wrong? I doubt California more than New York personally.

Edit: My bad, New Jersey is right outside new york. Still 4 teams in that area begs the same question for me.

I'm a little disappointed that KC got the shaft. what good is the Sprint Center now besides concerts?

Were they trying to get the Thrashers?

Either way, there is other teams wiht hardly any fan base that will probably move. if KC has the support, then who knows, right?

Edit: also, as I said before. Winnipeg has an astounding fan base for a new hockey team. Did you see all the fans at the draft among other things? Edmonton and Winnipeg were featured for their huge fan parties int he draft. That was pretty cool.

Don't worry, I bet a lot of these expansion teams will be looking to move again.

Phoenix is only still in Phoenix because the NHL(Bettman) is in love with them for some reason. They are doing everything possible to keep Phoenix but basically told Atlanta to do whatever they want

My uncle now lives in Phoenix, and he says the games are so extremely cheap because no one wants to go to them there. Seriously. He used to live in Calgary, and he said the ticket prices are all like a fifth of the costs in phoenix or something insane. It's like 300 some bucks for front row seats to a Calgary game. To be fair though, Calgary is probably one of the biggest hockey towns out there, along with the likes of Edmonton, Boston, Detroit & Winnipeg. I'm sure there's other big hockey towns, but those are the biggest I know of.

Vancouver's not a major hockey town from my personal witnessing of the years (especially this one) in contrast to fans of Edmonton & Calgary.

Chicago is up there now that old man Wirtz kicked it and the organization has turned around

Up until around the late 80's, the Blackhawks were the team in Chicago sports, everyone else came second. Then the Bulls started winning, Wirtz got cheaper and cheaper, and they became a joke in the late 90's up until about 2007

I just looked it up, the average ticket price for the Leafs is $117! Thats insane for such a crappy team

Yeah, I respect that though. good for them for cheering for their team through good or bad (bad in this case :P)

I believe it though. I once went to an Edmonton Oilers game against the Maple Leafs last year I think and a quarter of the Arena was filled with Toronto fans. A lot of Toronto folks move up to Edmonton in case you're wondering and that's impressive that they beat some Oilers fans to the seats. Edmonton is a team that has no problem selling all the seats in their arena quick. Why I'm not to impressed with Vancouver fans, they only cheer for their team when they're doing good from my observations. That's a generalization, but it's true for most people near/in Vancouver.

More on the Leafs game I saw though, it was pretty hilarious. Edmonton was non stop with the jokes. They had these Mac Vs. PC like ads that mocked the Maple Leafs. One was showing an Edmonton guy, next to a black and white figure of the Toronto Maple Leafs guy from 1967. The Maple Leafs guy was like "Yeah! We just won the Stanley Cup! Don't worry kid, you'll win one some day, but the NHL is Toronto Maple Leafs Territory!" Then the Edmonton guy was just like "Umm... You guys haven't won a cup in over 50 years." Then the maple leafs guy was just like "Oh... 50 years...?" looking all sad. You ahd to be there I guess. wonder if I could find it on youtube.
