Re: RetroUprising Awards 2010 Nominations
You bring up a good point. No one should feel like they need to be nominated for their contributions to be appreciated. As much as we try to fight it this is a popularity contest and we all know those are seldom fair or accurate. No offense to anyone nominated or the contributions that got them there.

That's why I was saying we should diversify our categories, to include the broadest range of potential candidates.
And seriously:
Best Gamer
Trophy Thief
Trophy Defender
Best Mastery
Most Impressive Score
Couldnt these have been boiled down to just 2 or 3, and open up more room for some more interesting categories? I don't know about you but I couldnt care less who the best trophy defender is, and on top of that just about everyone will have a different answer depending on what games they enjoy.

Also I realise I should have spoken up a long time ago but I was a really busy dude while all this was going on and didnt have time to think about it.

Then do something sensible like Demon Mask and Tenser and don't nominate anyone at all for those categories (instead of nominating yourself for everything). Only follow what interests you. For the record I don't care about best newcomer or forum participant, but that's just me. You can't please everyone.

Personally I could care less about the awards all together, but I would prefer if they were broader categories so that every active member could be at least nominated for something. That was my point, I wasnt complaining, I was trying to start a discussion so that maybe next year we could have more people included.
The site is supposed to be about fun for everyone, not a social climbing competition.
And for the record, this is based on looking out for all the valued members on the site so that they don't feel left out watching a contest made by the big dogs for the big dogs, from the sidelines.

Re: RetroUprising Awards 2010 Nominations
@steven- For the record this has been open to suggestion since the first time we did it. If you have a suggestion let's hear it. As you know there's no set in stone rules about this so we'll just keep tweaking it until we get it right or close enough for everyone.

Re: RetroUprising Awards 2010 Nominations
I know I should have spoken up earlier on the subject, like I said I was busy and didnt have time to think about it. I'm not trying to undo any of the work that has already been put into it, I'm just thinking about next year. A few categories of the top of my head:
Youngest Member
Oldest Member
Best Taste in Video Games
Memeber that trolls the most
Biggest Game Collection
Best Video Game Story
Best Game Reviewer
Again these were off the top of my head and some of them might be a little retarded, but it illustrates the kinda thing I'm going for here.

I wasn't trying to scold you for not speaking up sooner or anything like that. What I was saying is just speak up and we'll keep improving the awards as we go along.

You're beginning to make a lot more sense now. After reading your first few posts I wondered if you were anti the awards because you hadn't been nominated for enough!
I'm all for involving more people that may feel left out if the awards are predominantly all about what's gone on in the arcade. The more the merrier as these things are usually just a light hearted look back at the year. Hopefully if the awards you've mentioned get listed then a lot more of the 'non arcade active' peeps can feel part of this.
FWIW I'm glad R.U has an annual awards as they can be fun. Maybe there should be a few more light hearted categories such as funniest/grumpiest poster etc. I can't believe anyone on here takes these awards too seriously. Do you honestly think if W.B or Seahawk won best gamer they'd spend the whole year reminding everyone? Looking back at last years thread there were a lot more catergories that haven't been mentioned yet. Maybe now you've spoken out a few more will be added. There's plenty of time yet til January.

Based on this there is another award that could be added but I think it's in the bag.

I like your ideas Steve. Oldest member would be a one time deal though. Best Game Reviewer would really help with boosting that part of the forums. We should try and stay away from negative awards though.
How's about these ideas?
Most Games Played: the member who's played the most games total in RU
Most Helpful Tips and Tricks: the one who's helped the most with tips and tricks. (would also boost that section)
Won't you be my neighbor?: the member who puts the most effort in getting new member more active with forums and games and brings in new members.

Re: RetroUprising Awards 2010 Nominations
For the record I attempted to move away the awards from just pure gaming twice when we were discussing the topic. My suggestions were pretty much ignored so I assumed no one else felt the same way.

I don't remember seeing that. Maybe I just missed it. I like the idea of having broader categories myself since RU is such a diverse place, and people visit for different reasons.

So Seahawk, would it be ok to add a few more awards to the list? I think we got some good ideas.

Re: RetroUprising Awards 2010 Nominations
Sure, there's still a month in the year so we have time. But if we do this I think it will be a good idea if the current nominations thread is closed.
Let's do a quick vote.
Should we add more awards or keep it the way it is now?
If we decide to revise it let's try and make it final this time.

Re: RetroUprising Awards 2010 Nominations
I say make it the best it is.. the best it was.. and the best it will ever will be.
What about one for those who tend to lay low key in the background but do a lot? Example would be Sabby and Tiamat at one point.

Retro Uprising All Star - WB - was hoping to not have two..
^ ammending this since I really didn't want to have two people in my nominations. I choose Jojo in replacement.

I vote to add more categories. +1 on that.
Of the ones suggested, I like these:
Most Games Played: the member who's played the most games total in RU
Most Helpful Tips and Tricks: the one who's helped the most with tips and tricks. (would also boost that section)
Won't you be my neighbor?: the member who puts the most effort in getting new member more active with forums and games and brings in new members.

That might work, although that category is always spotty because so many referred people don't list who referred them. It might be nice anyway, though.

Or you don't wanna be known to know them.
@Joz: Registration has a part where you type in the user name of who referred you.

Only on the new RU, can't remember if you did that or not. I know stats don't show users I referred years back.
