I have and I can tell you he's right, about that part. They do play similarly since they're military themed FPS games. He's wrong about there being no difference between them.

I've played both, the way they play isn't similar.

It's hard to explain, but I've noticed the way they contol isn't the same.

That's a minor difference. The core gameplay is the same.

And a great point in this is the highschool kids and such. I hear nothing but stuff about halo and COD when they are released. I tolerate it but they never understand when I say I'm not buying the game.
Like yesterday in wood work. Kids rambling on about Black ops up near the wood box storage place, and so I go up there to put my wood away and they are asking me if I'm going to get black ops. Naturally I said no and just spoke the truth when they asked why; "I don't Like COD".

They asked what else there possibly is I'm looking forward to (there really is nothing much tbh) so I said if Timesplitters 4 comes out then I'll be as excited as you are now.

At least they agreed that TS4 would be cool

Seriously though you need to realize that this is the current generation of games and this is a major release, like it or not. This is the same as people being excited about SMB3 when it was being released. It's EXACTLY the same thing. I doubt you'd be speaking so disdainfully about that game if it was the hot thing coming out.

In my lunch period during school, my friends and I sit next to the table with a bunch of COD nerds. The only thing they talk about is COD. We finally decided after a week or two of listening to them to move to another table. My friend is a big Halo fan and never stops talking about it. Its gets pretty annoying especially when he recites all the kill streaks on Halo 3...

Off the top of my head, Shellshock, Shellshock 2, Battlefield Vietnam, Platoon (although based on a movie), Nam 1975, and Vietcong Purple Haze.

As far as buying it goes, if I had the spare cash and the spare time, I would buy it. I enjoy the COD games, especially MP. I'll gamefly it at some point. I'm sure it is good and all, but the Treyarch COD games < Infintity Ward COD games. Activision basically gives IW 3/4 of their COD budget and says, make the greatest fps of all time, they give TA the rest and say, make a good game that we can make profit on.

I like CoD more than Halo because it isn't about space marines, I just don't like the idea of space marines. That is honestly why I don't play as the Terrans in Starcraft, I just hate the idea of space marines.

I get it, you need to suspend your disbelief, but I just cannot do that for lightswords, plasma weapons, or accuracy shots fired from a gun held in a single hand, at a moving target a good distance away.

Also, the grunts are too stupid to tolerate.
They make the cows that run into burning barns because one of them starts moving that direction, seem smart.

No, unless they break the "genre molds" in a significant way they're all the same. It doesn't make them bad games, just very similar. Just like A Link to the Past is nearly the same game as Secret of Mana. I love both of those games dearly and would defend their greatness but I'm still able to admit they're basically standard action/adventure fare.

If you want to become overly defensive and fanboyish because you love the genre then more power to you but it doesn't change the facts.

@Tenser- Actually I thought I was being pretty rational about it. I agree they are basically the same but you're being overly simplistic about it. Of course most FPS will be similar, just like most RPGs are. The point I'm trying to make is once you get past that simple observation they are not similar anymore. Sure any FPS fan can pick up a new FPS and get into it pretty easily but there's still a learning curve and differences that they have to get used to in order to do well. If they were all so similar then this wouldn't be true. I'm not being a fanboy and I don't love the FPS genre, just some of the games that fall into that group.

The point is, once you've played one FPS you've played 80% of them. Just like once you've played one JRPG you've played 80% of them. a few minor mechanics and a different theme are the only things seperating the two.

They're identicle in their major game components. They only attempt to seperate themselves with minor game components.

A fan of A Link to the Past could pick up Secret of Mana and get into it pretty easily but there's still a learning curve and differences they have to get use to to do well. They are still very similar games.
