What are you talking about? Plenty of people love FF8 but just as many hate it. If that wasn't true then we wouldn't see this debate come up every single time the two games are talked about.

So it looks like Final Fantasy XIV (after having the staff swapped around) will have a major reboot in a December re-release that will coincide with the Playstation version.

By the look of things, "v2.0" will feature tons of throw backs to older Final Fantasy games and will draw off of them for setting-inspiration. The engine that it uses will also be a lot less demanding, so large scale PvP will be possible.

I hope it does well, and I may pick it up when it comes around.

It's already doomed because of the terrible launch and how they had to switch to FTP temporarily because customers were furious and leaving in droves. I can't imagine the switch back to subscription will be welcomed or trusted at this point. FFXI is still up and running, probably will be for years since it's the only successful MMO with a subscription besides WoW.

It would be neat to see if they could pick up some of the FFXI audience by offering one subscription for both games. I see what you mean when you say that it has an unscalable mountain of low consumer expectation, but I still think it has a chance (albeit, a small one) to pull through if it can generate favorable critic reviews.

The problem is they already tried to capture their FFXI audience by making the races exactly the same besides their names. Now that they burned that bridge it's gonna be really hard to repair, most just went back to FFXI. They also keep releasing content for 11, which was considered kinda dead, I think that means they know they need to keep 11 alive to keep MMO customers. Chances are if you're not already into paid MMOs you're not gonna suddenly decide to try one, know what I mean?

That's the problem. The subscription model is dead in the water. The only ones still using it with any success are grandfathered in, like WoW,FFXI and EVE.
