Being new is always bad when you're kinda soliciting something. It's hard to trust the motives of a guy with no posts who comes in with an agenda.
That other site is probably just a bunch of tools. Are they normally nice to you?

Btw did you try Ikariam yet? They have some mean spirited people but the mods are strict and they force people to play nice.
