Re: Netflix

Not sure if it's been ported from anything specific actually but it uses this: Navi-X Media Browser - Home Page

Homebrew is not illegal. Nor is custom firmware on any console. But using unauthorized software voids your warranty, meaning you are pretty much screwed if it breaks.

Firmware updates for most things, especially game consoles, are to block homebrew. To fix exploits that could be used to create a way to use homebrew.

The new features are a secondary thing.

That's what I meant by illegal. Like for example if you mod your xbox and connect to Xboxlive you can be perma banned without warning and without any way to undo it. None of the game companies want you adding custom stuff and they'll be combating it actively. Not worth it imo.

Yeah, but it isn't illegal. It's just against Xbox Live's terms of service.

Modded systems and homebrew can do a lot of awesome, perfectly legal things. With the case of an Xbox 360 there's pretty much only one reason to have it modded: to play backups of games (legal or illegal, I'm sure 99% illegal) but with something like the PSP there is a ton of open source applications that do everything from internet radio to making short animations and all kinds of other stuff.

Re: Netflix

Yeah I goofed by saying illegal. I meant it's against the tos of the companies and it's actively being combated(and worked around). It took my two posts to explain that, my bad.

Re: Netflix

You can legally make and play back ups of games you own. You just can't play the original and back up at the same time. The dicey part is if you lose the original you are still legally allowed to play the back up, however you no longer have proof that you are doing it legally. If you make a back up and sell the original you also have to include the back up with the sale, you can't keep it.

My PSP is modded, at first I did it for the purpose of playing backups, but then I got to searching, I found a way to make the PSP a controller by USB port, and by WiFi, and a ton of emulators. You just have to look around a bit.

This is true. I've modded pretty much every console I've owned since the PS2. I just like the process of modding, really. And seeing all the weird stuff I can do after I mod it.

There's no real reason to mod a 360 other than to play games illegally, but the original Xbox was a homebrew juggernaut with all sorts of great homebrew stuff. Same with the PSP.

And if you mod your Wii it can play DVDs. Which makes me wonder why it can't play DVDs out of the box.

When I typed that "TMT is no stranger.." thing I misread DM's post and thought he was suggesting that you were a stranger.. now it just looks weird and out of place, regardless it's true anyway.

I like modding consoles too. The PSP has some of the best homebrew out there too. First I modded it so I could play backups of games I had bought, to save battery power, and I just started to find all kinds of interesting things it could run.

Though modding the PSP can be a pain for someone who doesn't know what they are doing. The whole "Pandora Battery" thing kind of freaked me out at first. You know, temporarily killing your PSP, like surgeons do to their patients on some of the more complex surgeries.

Re: Netflix

My Netflix Top 10 is so weird. Every time I rate a bunch of movies, it gets stranger and stranger.

Right now it's Nosferatu(silent movie from 1929!), The Stand, Eddie Izzard: Glorious, Hackers, Following, The Longest Day, Ghostbusters 2, Workaholics(some TV show), District B13, and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.

For reference, the last three movies I watched and rated on Netflix were True Grit, Shutter Island, and Escape From New York. All three got four stars.

@Joz I know i'm not ninja but I'll answer anyway the original from the 60's or 70's was decent and the new one was solid in my opinion. I mean seriously it is Jeff Bridges.

I'm not a big fan of Westerns, but this one won me over. Though I admit the girl's character was ridiculously over the top, the other two main characters were done really well.

Wiimc is the bomb, I've been using it a lot lately ! I didn't know about the radio station stuff, I'm going to have to check it out. Some movies run kind of choppy, anything that is really high resolution might give you some problems. Mostly just kind of laggy video.

Re: Netflix

That has nothing to do with Canada. Several months ago, Netflix dropped a bomb and gave the middle finger to the customers by saying charging separate prices for DVD delivery and instant streaming without explanation. After the public uproar, the CEO sent out a sorry ass email about "how to deliver the best product, they were separating services". And that there wouldbe a new company. Netflix would continue the instant streaming and the new company "flixster" would handle the DVD service. The response was hugely negative, but it was full speed ahead until the stock price dropped by 1/3. The flixster plan was cancelled, but the new prices stayed in effect.

That being said, I still use Netflix, new content is added regularly, so I'm content.

Re: Netflix

The part everyone seems to forget or not know is Netflix was forced to change their payment model because some major movie companies pulled their support and went to other services. If they tried to keep the same model with less movies then they would've been doing much worse. They tried to split it up to compete. Speaking of that it won't be long before their competitors start charging more and having similar services to Netflix, they're just trying to win people over now with good deals.

Re: Netflix

I didn't bother too much with the DVDs. I like to watch a movie in the moment. I would end up with the DVD literally for months and at times I would just send it back before I even watched it. I had it just in case I saw something I REALLY wanted to watch and was only available on DVD. It was just two bucks more I said. But when the price doubled, I canceled the DVD and stayed with streaming only.
