Yeah my teacher was not nice and she factored my zero heavily into my grade for the year, like more than 50%. A friend of mine did his report but failed and he had to go to summer school over it, his final grade for the year was literally within a couple points of passing. I was there when he begged her to let him make up the points to save his family the money for summer school(like a hundred bucks or so), she refused. It was unbelievable to watch. Needless to say I hated her after that.

I had a teacher like that back in 4th grade, it seemed like she wanted to give me a
hard time 24/7. Once, I wore out my eraser on an essay, and she refused to give
me one and even told that I had to start over from scratch. So, I in turn refused to
do any in class work.

She then calls my mother while she is at work, claiming I'm being disruptive and
that I'm refusing to do my work. So I told my mom that I'm refusing to do the
essay because she was refusing me to give me an eraser to correct myself.

My mother in turn calls the principal of my elementary school who in turn forces
her to give me that eraser. She was pissed.

So she decided to keep giving me a hard time, by making me read in front of class
because she knows I have a fear of public speaking. I told my mother about it and
she scheduled an appointment with the principal and my teacher. My mom told me
she acted as though she was perfect and that she did nothing wrong throughout the
whole meeting. So my mother told the stories which got me transfered to another
class and in turn got her fired from the school.

She got what she deserved.

No, not nervous, the question did not bother me at all. It was more that I was a bit surprised by the question.

And I had just clicked on Tenser's spoiler and found a big, nasty spider staring me down. I knew it was coming, but I still opened it.

Sounds like this teacher I had in 4th grade too SJB.

She wore pants that made her look like a clown, would act nice and act very mean with a drop of a hat. Only teacher to ever send me to a lunch detention. I then when she said go write my name on the board acted like I did but didn't and never got caught. I'd love to go back in time a tick her off servely.

I've had some pretty terrible teachers as well. Fourth and sixth grade were the worst.
My fourth grade teacher was convinced I was an idiot and she refused to allow me to make up any work I missed when I was gone on Thursdays because of the gifted program I was in. I missed most every Thursday, you want to know when every test was scheduled? Thursday, every damn time it was a Thursday. And she'd call me an idiot and tell me I couldn't make it up.
Sixth grade, my teacher just didn't like me, honestly didn't like me. Every now and then she'd have us read little non-fiction type books and have us summarize it. Different books for different people, and every single time, what do you suppose the books I was given were about? Spiders, she clearly saw the distress when I was given the first book, I stated that I couldn't handle looking at all those pictures of spiders and learning facts about them like how many spiders there are everywhere. She said I should just deal with it and stop being a baby about it.
My ninth grade English teacher was pretty bad too. Every time he had someone read aloud, it was me. Every time someone was making noise in the classroom, it was me. Every time I turned something in late, he'd yell at me and have me show him the contents of my backpack and binder. He would then yell at me for being disorganized, and threaten to give me Saturday school if I did not have everything organized the next day. This man legitimately hated me, as he didn't once ever demand to see other people's stuff and check for organization.

One good thing about my story is that I did get to mess with her for being that way. I knew I was gonna fail for a couple weeks before the end of the year and I made her time with me as miserable as possible without getting myself in trouble.
The next year she actually tried to be friendly with me but I don't forgive so easily. Oddly enough I had no problems with English classes after hers, I wonder why?

I have decided that I shall not be buying the 3DS. Thinking about it, there aren't any games that I would really want besides a possible old school Resident Evil title and Final Fantasy V. I have decided that it just wouldn't be the best option for me at this time, perhaps I shall give it a decade for its prices to drop, but maybe my mind will change sooner. Until then, I'm out for the idea.

Failing a student for not giving a presentation is a bit harsh.

That being said, public speaking is something that should be taught and encouraged in school as it is a quite useful skill to have as an adult.

I disagree. If you never plan on using the skill in your career then it's a complete waste of time. Forcing an introverted kid to make a fool out of himself is not helping them learn anything really.

I disagree. Even grave diggers and burger flippers would do well with some public speaking skills.

Public speaking skills also come in handy when meeting new people and introducing yourself.

@SJB: You're completely missing the point. Public speaking is a useful life skill to have even if you never use it for future employment endeavors.

It's akin to learning how to change a tire. You may never decide to be a mechanic but it's an important skill to have just in case.

@Tenser- to me there's a difference between learning how to speak articulately in front of an audience in typical business setting and just being sociable and able to talk to people in a comfortable setting. The former is a useless skill for lots of people and the latter is something that oral presentations in school doesn't help with.

You've never taken a public speaking course, have you? Part of public speaking is being able to be sociable and present yourself as both comfortable and confidant.

I assure you, they are not separate things. Did your high school not offer public speaking or were you just too introverted to sign up for it?

I think my school had a class, but ended up going with the Driver's Ed class.

But as I said, I never saw a reason outside of school to need it.

I went to three different high schools and as far as I know they had no such courses. Public speaking consisted of a moronic English teacher forcing it on us with almost no instruction on how to do it or how to handle the stress of it.

No such public speaking course in my school either.

Oh, I am the worst public speaker ever, and yet I was recently forced to stand up at a convocation and speak in front of the entire school. Damn, I hate that feeling, all of that cheering after I was done felt so patronizing, so false. I doubt they really cared about what I had to say about how I'm going to compete at the state level in programming. I doubt half of them even understand the concept of computer programming, don't understand the concept that there is someone behind the scenes that had to create every program.
I vowed to never again speak in front of that many people, I doubt it will cause problems, I will probably never have to speak in front of well over 1000 people again.

But DM it sounds like people may have been clapping because they're proud of one of their own going on to represent them. It doesn't matter if they care about what's going on or if they even know you.

The applause felt forced, like they were only doing it because they are told to applaud anyone who speaks at these convocations.
I know it is an irrational belief, and I know they were probably proud, it is just the feeling I get after public speaking at all.
