Re: Official countdown to Dragon Quest 9
Tenser is right about the Have a ball ability. It can be the best metal slime killer when it hits. Combined with flaining nails and metal slash it usually kills the metal slime/babble in the first round. Besides missing randomly the only drawback is when there's multiple enemies and the damage gets spread out.
Btw do either of you like ranger? I like some of the abilities(vanish helps a lot and wolf whistle is surprisingly strong) but for the most part it seems like a job to level for abilities and then never use again. Just curious if I'm not noticing something awesome about it.
Also sage has terrible hit points. My character has some minor hp bonuses and her hp was still unbelievably low on a high level. It has some kickass mp though and the spells rock.

Re: Official countdown to Dragon Quest 9
I like the Ranger class. It has nice agility and deftness, the axe skill tree (hatchet man works wonders on metals and helm splitter is amazing in boss battles) and works perfectly as a back up healer (moreheal, zing, and evac). The only drawback is that you have to omnivocate a shield.

Re: Official countdown to Dragon Quest 9
Update:
Did a three more grotto runs and nabbed a 2% drop, another pair of Vesta Gloves. I think Equinox always drops the same items.
I ran through the Tower of Nod and grabbed some good loot but there's a dragon end boss that I couldn't wake up.
I completed another quest which netted me a better hat for Komoe, the Halo. I alchemized up Tenser's Mirror Armor into Catoptric Armor. I also double alchemized up Alicia's Magic Armor, Mittens, and Shield into Ethereal Armor, Gloves, and Shield.

Re: Official countdown to Dragon Quest 9
I haven't had much time to play lately, but my last few sessions have consisted of:
-Trying to find a treasure map location, I won't be surprised if it comes out of the ocean after completing some other quests.
-Trying to figure out who the last guy to complete Clauses challenge is.
-Trying to find the 3 "master" monsters to finish the boomerang challenge.
-Switching alot of characters to jobs that are useless to them for the ability points.
-Trying to advance the story regarding an old book and the princess of Stornway, who won't tell me about it till later.
-Finished of the sage vocation challenges and got a really good book.
Those books and scrolls are so sweet.

I did those exact same things the other day too. I also made a pair of impregnable leggings with one of my orichalcum because I really needed another good leg piece. It's 4 star and just about equal with the Invincible leggings I got from a grotto.

Re: Official countdown to Dragon Quest 9
Yeah I tried land crabs too but I figured that it had to be the ocean since I spent very little time fighting there. I don't think I met up with that one until I did this quest either.
Btw did you guys come across the Uncommon Cold monster yet? He only appears on one little island that I know of and he's not that common, obviously. My characters are strong but this guy was hitting all of them with like 100-150 and he killed my priest in one strong hit. I killed two before I decided he wasn't worth the bother.

Re: Official countdown to Dragon Quest 9
Are you 100% percent sure it's a king crab? I've got 27 of them defeated, and it's hard to believe my most powerful guy has not been responsible for even one of those deaths, there crawling all over the level 50 or 60 treasure maps so I will confirm either way.

Yeah I'm 99.9% sure it was a King crab. Have you been fighting them in the ocean or just in grottos? It might only count in normal areas.

You might be right about needing to run into them in the ocean.
Tonight I spontaneously decide my luminary Chalkie needed the feel the burn ability so I'm about 30 points off now.
I beat a few treasure maps, and found a new grotto boss and got lucky and secured a 2% drop, it was an awesome helmet that trumps all my other helmets by a decent margin.
I also found some matadors gloves in a blue chest in a grotto, these offer the highest deftness boot of all my gloves.
---------- Post added at 07:52 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:13 AM ----------
So I just killed one in a grotto and he didn't recognize my talents so it must have to be in the ocean.

Re: Official countdown to Dragon Quest 9
I assumed it was non grotto because it's a specific character you're looking for. I think it only took me like 2-3 kills to get it.
Btw I fought that boss called the Traumenator or however you spell it. I was intimidated at first but he actually went down easy and I don't think he really even did much. That damn Nemean lion is much scarier with his disruptive wave spam. I fought him in a level 40 grotto, was hoping for something new.

Re: Official countdown to Dragon Quest 9
Ive seen 4 new people since the trauminator guy, actually I fought a trauminator tonight it super easy, I don't even think i had to heal.
Weird that you say it took 3-4 kills, the other 2 for me were first kills.

Re: Official countdown to Dragon Quest 9
I could be remembering it wrong, I killed a lot of crabs before I figured it out.
Did either of you do the pincushion quest? I understand how to do it but I haven't bothered trying it yet because it seems like it'll take a while. Just wondering how long it takes and if the paladin scroll or w/e is worth it.
Also how do you make enemies angry? It happens all the time but it seems completely random. I'm doing that quest that wants you to finish off an angry enemy with a critical and I need just one more. I got the other one randomly and I can't hit that lucky roll again. This quest has been open far too long and it's bugging me.

Re: Official countdown to Dragon Quest 9
There is a luminary ability called "eyes on me" that's what I used.
I haven't done any of the paladin challenges yet, I'm a bit of a dummy at times because it should have been my no. 1 priority. I'll get on them next session.
Also I found out today you can blast the Starflights steam whistle by hitting R, it doesn't seem to do anything but it's fun to do while flying over Stornway in the middle of the night.

You can anger enemies using the Paladin's Knight Watch coup de grace or the Whistle ability. I also find that casting Zing in battle will often anger an enemy.

It's a level 1 but you offer to give Baramos the experience and level him up instead. I kept the experience (around 80k) and he dropped a mini medal.
There's no dungeon, it go straight to the boss.
I found out that Baramos was the final boss in DQ3.
You get the Baramos Map by finishing this quest:
