Why else did you think Atari buried a lot of copies out in the desert somewhere (true story)? Becasuse they don't want anymore people buying & playing a crappy game.
That's why.
Oh really? It's amazing how history changes every time someone needs to make an argument against E.T.

I will offer a little contest here.
+Rep for anyone who can tell me what actually happened to the unsold E.T. games.
+Rep for anyone who can tell me what other game/s were along with E.T.
+Rep for anyone who can name 1 of the 2 real reasons why E.T. didn't sell.

Wikipedia is not a valid source nor would any source that gets their information from wikipedia. You can actually try wikipedia if you want, but the article is blatantly wrong and I'll make a fool out of you for doing so.
Unsold E.T. Games= probably weren't sold.. I don't believe the the desert myth... people probably didn't wanna buy them.

Other games= I dunno

3. People didn't like it, it got bad reviews, so people didn't buy it.

Re: Greatest Game of All Time

I love the New Mexico landfill idea. I've also heard this mythical Atari landfill is in Mexico, Tennessee and Colorado. Urban legends are great even if they don't make sense. If you were a company trying to make a profit, why would you pay all that money to destroy a product, even if it wasn't selling well?

E.T. received amazing reviews when it was released. You need to really think of the timeline when E.T. was sold.

Re: Greatest Game of All Time

I believe one of the reasons E.T. did not sell had something to do with a 'videogame crash' in the early 80's. I vaguely remember watching an 'Icons' on G4 that mentioned something like that.

Re: Greatest Game of All Time

+ rep for Billy Hoyle.

A lot of people falsly accuse E.T. for being one of the causes for the Great Game Crash but the truth is, unfortunatly E.T. was released after the crash had already began.

@Count: Almost correct.

Re: Greatest Game of All Time

I'm curious to find out what actually happened to the unsold cartridges. On the same episode that I learned about the Crash I believe they also said the games were disposed of in a landfill somewhere in the Southwest U.S. Were they incorrect?

Re: Greatest Game of All Time

While it was true that some Atari products were delivered to a landfill in Alamagoo, NM this was only what could not be stored in Atari's warehouse in El Paso, TX.

You see, after the console market crashed, Atari wisely decided to consolidate all of its merchandise to one warehouse to save money on storage expense. Limiting itself to a storage capacity of a certain number per item, any extra merchandise was to be destroyed. Now, it is true that the majority of what needed to be scrapped was E.T., Pacman, and Atari consoles. Almost a little of everything had to go. The reason for the overstock of E.T. and Pacman themselves was not because they were bad games but because they were the last two major massed produced Atari games.

Answers:
1. Some were destroyed but others are being stored in a warehouse in El Paso.
2. Nearly all of them, including consoles and peripherals.
3. Great Console Crash and the rising popularity of the PC.

Re: Greatest Game of All Time

For me no game has even come close to Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. They knocked the ball so far out of the park, I don't think anything will ever come close. Second (at least in recent memory) has to be Assassins Creed II which probably has the best written story in any game I have ever played.

As far as Zelda games, I would have to choose OoT and Z II: AoL.

Other favorites would be:

- King's Quest (series)

- Space Quest (series)

- King of Chicago

- Sinbad and the Throne of the Falcon

- Battletoads

- Shinobi

And many more I can't think of right now...

Re: Greatest Game of All Time

Man, so many games! Never long enough to play them.

Any of:
Wonder Boy series (after the first one)
Fantasy Zone series (my high score on the SMS version of FZ was one of my proudest. It got beat )
Zelda series
Wing Commander was great
Shadowrun on Snes was really deep
Mario Kart on SNES!
Civilisation 3 on PC was awesome too.
Track & Field coin-op for the memories of trying to beat the hurdles when I was six in the arcade!

All of these and more! I find it impossible to pick just one hahaha
