That's assuming we're only talking about our current understanding of interstellar travel. Aliens could send us some ground breaking info, like in the movie Contact, and make our understanding obsolete.
That is a realistic theory about information exchange though. As far as we know that would be the easiest and quickest way to contact aliens far from us.
