I don't know where to begin with this, this game rules. My brothers friend showed it to him, he showed it to me. I guess it's rapidly growing popularity all over the internet it'll be a major hit within no time. The good news is it is really fun right now as it is and it isn't even finished.
To summarize this is a game that is about survival and adventure. When you download the game it gives you a randomly generated world 3 times the size of earth (or so I heard). Never the less, the world is huge and it is all made of these sort of building blocks so to speak.
There is no real goal and that is the beauty of it, you set your own goals whether it's establishing a base weaving through tunnels, in the air, in mountains you name it. You can do this or you can try to travel through the world making an essential camp every night to hide from the night enemies such as skeletons that shoot arrows, spiders that can jump at you and kill you easily and exploding green things called creepers and god I hate these things so much. They will destroy everything near where they explode and take away most of your health. It provides challenge and you can turn enemies off or make them easier but what's the fun in that?
Tools can be made... Many tools to help you dig, mine, etc. All well finding better materials to build better tools by digging deep. everything is essentially made out of cubes too so you can build houses and bridges gravity not being an issue for any of the types of blocks with the exception of sand and gravel.

I suggest reading those before you play otherwise you won't know how to make anything and the crafting page is extremely helpful.
Enjoy, I can provide you with the survival mode if you want which is essentially single-player mode (which is where it's all at). But other than that multi-player is not legal for free download.

Edit- Once you download extract the files then throw the
.minecraft folder in application data which can be found by using
run then typing in
%appdata% ... If this folder does not go there then you will not be able to play, when it does you will get a preset login and password. All you have to do is hit
log in then hit
play offline. You have 5 worlds open to use.
We now have a social group for Minecraft if anyone is interested.
