PS3 Disc read error: Urgent, Want help before the 11th please!!

suppose there is no harm in asking what to do here. I mean my brother bought a ps3 first year, it stopped reading discs after 4 months and he gave it to me since. I tried to fix it last year to no avail. Let me just make it clear that I am not willing to pay for repair or buy a new one. I am fed up with sony as it is with their consoles reliability int the past and their bad service.

Supposedly this was a common malfunction in ps3's early on and can be fixed easily enough here. Last year I made the attempts to use the recovery screens but nothing happened.

I also would like to get this fixed because its christmas, and while its christmas its also my brothers birthday on the 11th. I dont have much money for all these gifts for my family. So I'd like to attempt to repair his ps3 before the 11th and surprise him with it being fixed. I know it would make him happy. There is nothing to lose really, it's as good as dead to him. Just in the sense that it stopped working so I know he loved the games he had on it and the ps2/ps1 compatibility.

Please, I know a lot of you are very skilled in these areas with computers and programming and fixing these kinds of things, so am I but I'm not perfect with it. I've fixed an Xbox before by actually opening it up... I'm just hoping the ps3 doesnt come to that but I could probably do it if I had to.

Alright, please flood me with suggestions, I really want this fixed before the 11th which is next saturday.
