ArcadeOX version 2 feature request
I am currently working on the next version of ArcadeOX.
Please post feature requests and comments here. Also if you can afford to make a donation to this cause please do so.
Planned additions for version 2.
- Run DOS games like Quake and older PC games.
- Use the Programs Folder instead of the Temp folder to prevent files disappearing and make it easier to access save states and other files.
- Make it easy to open the arcadeox file so you can make back ups of save states.
- Display the size of the arcadeox temp folder as it can get very big and you might want to monitor the size and clear out games you wont play again.
- Improve downloader. Include progress bar and resume support so you can run files that are over 100MB.
- Improve sandbox. More on this below.
- Allow other websites to use ArcadeOX. More below.
1-4 are mostly complete already.
Things that might be added after these items are finished.
- Improve installer
- Back save states up online.
Sandbox
In computer terms a sandbox means that a program is blocked off from the rest of your computer. A program ran inside a good sandbox can not access any part of your computer except itself. That means if you run a program that contains a virus from inside a sandbox then you would not be infected and would remain safe. The current version of ArcadeOX already does this to an extent but before I can allow other sites access to use ArcadeOX I have to make this feature extremely solid and robust and do lots of testing and hire other programmers to double check my work. Which is expensive.
After the sandbox is finished you will be able to run a file infected with a virus from your email or other websites inside the arcadeox sandbox and even though you ran a file with a virus your computer will not be infected. There are other sandboxes that already exist for just this purpose, all I would be doing is combining their functionality with arcadeox for added protection. This is to allow you to be safe running arcadeox games from any website.
Other sites.
In version 2 when a site tries to launch an arcadeox game you will be asked if you want to allow that site to use arcadeox, yes, no, always, never.

The biggest improvements needed for this are an obvious chat system and make it obvious so we can funnel non-forum members into netplay and have more people to choose from and easy instructions for things like ports, IPs and firewalls and maybe some tools to help set those things up and verify that they are working correctly. I want to finish the current stuff I have started first though.
Other than that, there probably wont be much improvement. If you have a good internet connection, live in the same state and know what you are doing then netplay should work well now in several systems in ArcadeOX Full Mode. If you have a bad internet connection or live across an ocean from the person you are trying to play then it probably will never work for you.
Basically what needs to be done is make it more easy and obvious. The actual technical functionality is not perfect but it is about as good as it is going to get.

If we get this I'll be happy. The DOS games sound cool too.

Re: ArcadeOX version 2 feature request
I have an odd request, but its not very important actually.. Its just, id like the option to have multiple 1st player controls for game systems. So that I can set up my controller, and if that goes vanishing again, I wouldn't have to re fix all the configurations to keyboard again.

I think he is asking about ArcadeOX saving custom controls. What happens now is, you can map the controls to your controller/device, but then those controls often reset, and you have to do it again. Some systems seem to save controls longer than others.

yeah. thats it exactly^^ thanks. Some sort of code that works with most systems for custom controls.. That way you can have a controller, and just play using it without having too constantly input the controls..
though that could be difficult because the systems have different button schemes..
Would still be a cool idea though.
though coin op would have to be manual still, because of some of the games movement bits. mainly those that use the roller ball thing or a tilted screen.

The best I could do is make sure each individual system uses the same default controls, which I have but there are still a couple oddballs that could be improved. But if you wanted to change the controls you would have to do it for one system at a time. I can try to improve the control saving like mentioned above so you only have to do it once for each system. Also I could make some default xpadder settings that you could download and you would only need to edit them once to work with all systems, in theory.

Re: ArcadeOX version 2 feature request
The reset is often caused by system updates which is caused by it being a new service. After everything gets worked out and solid then that wont happen as often. Though 2 & 3 listed in the first post should help with that.

That would be nice. Personally, I see this more with Coin-Ops currently than anything else. I guess this is probably because each game is more or less a different system with its own control layout.

Re: ArcadeOX version 2 feature request
oh never mind about that Kong. Ill just suck it up and set my controls^^ dont need Xpadder for my controller. I was just thinking that a second set of controls would be cool. Like for mapping buttons, having an option to map two or more keys for that button.
For example NES mapping the A button to Z and C at the same time. Only A would be keyboard Z and controller button 1 on my item.
Oh I hope that makes sense.. if not let me know and ill try again @.@
of course the mapping for each system would be system specific. Setting controls for the different systems isn't a problem, its the fixing buttons from keyboard to controller and back which is a headache.

Re: ArcadeOX version 2 feature request
If I understood correctly, you want to be able to easily switch between a controller and a keyboard? That is possible in all ArcadeOX Score Mode games. Press Tab and configure the controls.
In all other modes for most systems the only option is to use something like xpadder. This isn't likely to change.

Re: ArcadeOX version 2 feature request
Maybe asking a bit too much, but any chance of some N64 games popping up in the (hopefully not too distant) future?
That would be ace.

Re: ArcadeOX version 2 feature request
Short answer ask again in 2012.
N64 was produced until 2002. We do not add systems until it has been out of production for at least 10 years. This is our definition of retro and I feel a decent compromise between preserving the past and blatant infringement.
Aside from the 10 year limit there are technical limitations. The video card requirements and file sizes are larger than anything we currently have. And configuring N64 to run on a computer currently requires tweaking settings for each individual computer that isn't really easy for our system to automate or for a novice computer user to manually setup.

Re: ArcadeOX version 2 feature request
those upgrades sound pretty cool, especially the use of programs instead of the temp files folder. also, maybey we could do some multiplayer? me and my brother think it would be cool if we can play SF:ALPHA2 on the same PC. just a thought.

Re: ArcadeOX version 2 feature request
ArcadeOX already supports multiplayer. Default keys for player 2 are ussually the numpad. Depending on the system and mode press Tab or Alt to access the menu and configure the keys.

Re: ArcadeOX version 2 feature request
Happy New Year!
Glad to hear these news, i would be more interested in the arcadeOX, to use it on a website, will it be possible to run ringtone maker, wallpaper maker, and other small softwares on my website as online tools?.
That would make me really happy
Also, i would be happy to offer myself as a tester (for free offcourse)
You really amaze me with this website

Without knowing anything besides the name of the programs I would guess yes. Check ArcadeOX - Play any game in your web browser in March.
