Lucasfilm sold to Disney

Well George Lucas is cashing out and selling Lucasfilm and all it's property(Lucasfilm, ILM, Lucasarts, etc) to Disney for $4.05 billion.

It was also announced there will be a new Star Wars Trilogy in Episodes 7,8,9 following Luke, Han, and Leia after the events of Return of the Jedi.

Ah I was gonna post that when I got home from work. Anyway I'm excited. I'm one of the few who liked the new trilogy and look forward to another. It's going to be cool to see who they cast as leia.

Honestly I don't see a problem with it. Disney bought out Marvel and they're doing even better than before. The newer Star Wars movies were kinda lame so maybe taking control from that jowly blow hard might help. I think he's at the point where no one questions his stupid ideas because he's George freaking Lucas. When you have no one honestly critiquing you it hurts your creativity. Thus we get emo Darth Vader and Jar Jar.

UPDATE - It seems that Disney is going to focus more on social/mobile, rather than console.

I disagree Dudebro. The new trilogy didn't feel like they were created by an old man following old school film rules. They were put out by the new crowd that follows an all cash no art formula. I would guess he had little to do with the new trilogy.

@Tenser- That's unfortunate.

@Kong- Lucas has said he wanted to gear his newer movies and tv shows towards a younger audience, like kids. He wants to get them hooked like he did with the previous generations. That's why the new trilogy starts off with a movie obviously aimed at kids and ends with a movie that's supposed to register with the young teen crowd. The TV show is very much a kids cartoon. It's all part of the plan, he doesn't really care about the older fans since they're already hooked.

The TV Show may be on Cartoon Network, and it may be classified as a kid's show, but there is no way in heck it actually is. There are plenty of dark moments in the series, as well as multiple Clone Troopers getting decapitated, etc.

@RedLetter- I know it's not actually a bad show and it has some maturity to it. My point is it's specifically aimed at kids. It's a deliberate effort by Lucas to hit that target demographic. The parts with maturity are tossed in for the parents watching with their kids.

@Kong- Why do you think Lucas isn't on board with that mentality? I've seen nothing that shows he's stepping back and letting other people influence his movies/show. He's behind this 100%.

I didn't say he wasn't on board. You said the movies were his stupid ideas and that no one questioned his ideas. I think they were the stupid ideas of someone else and that he didn't question them.

I think that because the original 3 were not formulaic. The last 3 were. And I think that is a problem of a younger generation. I am guessing he signed off on everything but didn't do much else.

Nah he's in control creatively and he's seen as too big to fail. Is it so hard to believe that the people around him would be afraid to criticize his ideas? I don't mean 100% of his ideas of course, just stuff like Jar Jar, baby Anakin pod racer, Emo Vader and other poorly thought out ideas. Neither of us are in the know, as far as I know, so this is all guess work.

The reason I believe I'm right is because everything I've heard/read/seen about him points to him being a control freak. Star Wars is his baby and it's also his cash cow. It seems like he only sold it to Disney because he realized he's not gonna live forever and he wanted it to be a smooth transition, I can't fault that logic.

Well I like this better than Fox or whoever it was that was going to make 7-9, or whatever real or rumourful story that was back several years ago. I like 1-3 also. Same as steven though, 4-6 are better, but 1-3 were fine. Minor complaints, but minor things usually don't wreck movies for me hardly at all.

Although, now that I say that, it occurs to me that Jar - Jar Binx was pretty Disneyesque, so why not?
Disney puts out some Ok movies and shows once in a while; at least they didn't give it to
... ... ...Uwe Boll and terrible video game movies

Still, I'm not looking forward to seeing anything like Yoda with those silly mouse ears on his head or anything.

The only question mark that I have about a 7, 8, 9 is that there is already a whole expanded universe that is accepted as canon. So are you going to have stories that take place 30 plus years after 4, 5, 6 with original characters (btw, good luck getting someone like Harrision Ford, who has admitted that he hates Star Wars) to come back to play Solo.

As far as them actually making movies go, who knows. Lucasfilms isn't just Star Wars, it is also the Indiana Jones franchise. I believe Industrial Light & Magic is already owned by Disney/Pixar. I also do not believe the deal extends to Lucasarts, which is the game division.

They don't need Harrison Ford and they shouldn't even consider it, he's 70 and cranky. They can just recast his character. I know for some of you that may seem like blasphemy but Han did become a different person after the events of the movies anyways.

Really though they should just use one of the countless characters they have already made and bring them to life on screen. How about a Jedi Wookiee?

I thought there was a jedi wookiee at some point in the timeline? I can't remember his name but basically it's not impossible for there to be a wookiee jedi, it's just that they very, very rarely have the ability to sense/use the force as a species.

George Lucas in all his wisdom has decreed that they cannot make anymore wookiee jedis. Unless that changes they'd have to use one of the existing examples, Tyvokka being the coolest. There's also chewbaccas nephew lowbacca-

Kirlocca, a jedi master and battlemaster.

And Ruhr, a force sensitive wookiee from a group that believes in using both sides of the force equally, which might make a really cool movie-

There's tons of other cool characters out there. Most of them were made by other people, Lucas just oversaw them and gave approval.
