As we head into May, schools from the elementary to collegiate levels will be ending classes and releasing their nurtured and burnt out academics into the wild. Almost immediately, these processed minds will start looking for their first career, others will be hunkering down for a 3 months summer job so they can make some pocket change, while others will just be going to their nine to five position as usual. Now that I'm a nine to fiver, I long for the good ol' days of my summer schedule playing marathon sessions of my favorite games.
When I was back in school, some of my friends never understood why I loved playing video games in the summer. While everyone was writing "H.A.G.S." in my yearbook, sometimes with phone numbers (this was before cell phones were super mainstream mind you), I could barely contain my excitement to not only leave the scholastic environment, but to jump as fast and as hard as I could to my living room to finally finish out Starfox 64, Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR, as it is known to cool people) or Pokemon. I wanted to throughly invest in all of these games—I gold medaled in every Star Fox 64 level, booyah—a type of heavy dedication only the I could only afford in the summer. The season also provided an opportunity to catch up on games I couldn't play because of things like "book reports" or "capstone papers."
