Resident Evil 2 for me.
Great adventure/survival horror games always beat great sports/arcade racing games in my book.

Re: Best Game Ever - Round 12 (Tie-Breaker)
RE 2 for me. That game pushed survival/horror games to a new plateau IMHO. I like all the Mario Kart games, but I don't think the N64 version stands out over any of the others in the series.

Re: Best Game Ever - Round 12 (Tie-Breaker)
RE 2 had 4 versions right off the bat; Claire/Leon A/B, even after that it has replay value so you can try to go back and beat it quicker for a better grade, AND after that you can unlock the 4th survivor mode where you can play as HUNK. All of these versions were fun to play, and the enemies and puzzles were very inventive.
Mario Kart 64 set the new standards on racing games, I'm not sure but I think it was the first racing game that could feature 4 players. It also would have the best 3-d racing game graphics to the date.
Hard choices, but I personally like RE2 more.

Mario Kart 64. The early RE games sucked.

Re: Best Game Ever - Round 12 (Tie-Breaker)
Yeah, man! They sucked. They just totally sucked!!! ...wait, what? The controls in RE2 were unrefined, but the game itself was compelling enough to help distinguish survival-horror as a distinct gaming genre. (Although props have to go to 'Alone in the Dark' for basically inventing it.)
RE2 > Mario Kart 64

Re: Best Game Ever - Round 12 (Tie-Breaker)
It's the "steak or the lobster" question. I mean, both are good, it just comes down to personal preference, yes? Actually, I'd prefer eggplant, so perhaps this is a bad analogy...

Re: Best Game Ever - Round 12 (Tie-Breaker)
@NinjaTiamat: I've always found the older Resident Evils to be better.
@Sez: RE2 is the police station.
@Ragtag: Sweet Home for the Famicom I believe was the first. Made by Capcom, house of residing evil, group of investigators stuck in a mansion with no way out, etc... Great game, hard as hell.

I've played that game and, quite honestly, I think it felt much more like a RPG than survival horror. It's been forever, so my memory might be off, but I believe the menus were very similar to Faxanadu and others. Plus it's a top-down perspective with tiny characters similar to Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, etc.
Alone in the Dark had that closer, over-the-shoulder look (sometimes), coupled with rooms displayed in varying angles, and a more action-based gameplay...just like Resident Evil. Perhaps I'm quibbling over trivial things, but I think it more closely resembles what would now be considered a survival-horror game. Either way, good reference on Sweet Home.

Survival Horor? No...
First game with gruesome and scary cut scenes? Oh yes.
Warning: these are as gory as 8-bit graphics get.
Well actually, there's a scene were one guy has all his skin and organs fall off his bones.

Re: Best Game Ever - Round 12 (Tie-Breaker)
I admit, the atmosphere and ambiance were far better in the earlier entries, but it simply couldn't outweigh the crappy controls and dull gameplay.

Re: Best Game Ever - Round 12 (Tie-Breaker)
Yes, it has an RPG menu-based battle system with a top down perspective, but neither of those should alter a game's genre or theme. (Unless combat is the major factor in the game, which it isn't. It's exploration of the mansion.)
The game had the very beginning elements of the survival horror theme down. Being stranded, very restrictive inventory, puzzle solving, death traps, horrific cut scenes, slowing piecing together a gruesome back story. You have to remember that this is an 8-bit game. With everything else packed on to the cart it would have been graphically impossible to portray it most any other way.
The only other way to accomplish it would have been through a 1st person style hybrid of a RPG/West and Corridor shooter. Some kind of crappy mish mash that would have ended up looking like a Bard's Tale remake.

In RE4, they changed the camera to a behind the back perspective in order to better fit their control scheme. In RE games, Up always means forward. When your character is facing toward the screen, this can be disconcerting. I often pressed Down, which meant I would go back down the stairs or whatever, sit through a mini cutscene, then try again. I found this really annoying. Awkward would probably be a better word to describe to controls.
