Best game ever? Round 2
So I've decided to keep each poll open for four days. I'll add a new one every two days to keep things interesting. These are the other eight nominations from the 1972-1988 era.

Re: Best game ever? Round 2
I like all of them but it's obviously The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros ftw.

Re: Best game ever? Round 2
I would have liked to vote for them all as well. I managed to narrow it down to Zelda and Metroid myself.

What!?! Where's 'A boy and his Blob'?
All kidding aside, it's a close call between Mario and Contra for me.

Re: Best game ever? Round 2
Like last time, I picked four. I chose Galaga, Super Mario Bros., Contra, and The Legend of Zelda. It was really hard to leave Ninja Gaiden off, but I felt that it was the fifth-best game on the list.

Re: Best game ever? Round 2
Mario and Link are over-rated. I picked Ninja Gaiden and Galaga.

I thought it came out 1992 myself.
Gamefaqs might be using its first release date no matter which area, which would be 1988 in Japan.

Re: Best game ever? Round 2
Has anyone that voted for Legend of Zelda actually played it? I mean i love the Zelda games, but the ones for the original NES sucked, they where down right miserable......now Link To The Past.....Amazing!!!

I'm sure pretty much everyone here has played LoZ multiple times. Welcome to Retro Uprising by the ways. If you have any questions or need some assistance, feel free to ask me.

Re: Best game ever? Round 2
Link to the Past is amazing and far superior but The Legend of Zelda is still awesome and a classic. I would vote for it again if we had another poll like this.
Welcome to RU.

Re: Best game ever? Round 2
Thank you for the welcome party! haha I dont deny the influence of the original LoZ's (1&2), Im just saying that they could have done a little more work on those games, even for their time (not so much the first one, but the second one?! what was that?! It was just like how different Super Mario Bros. 2 was from the others.......I guess its more weird than anything)

Re: Best game ever? Round 2
Yeah the second game wasn't a great idea, imo, but at least they did try to innovate rather than just copy their first game. Can't fault them for trying something different. Nowdays most games just stick with what sells and never try something that's radically different from what is safe. The only modern example I can think of is Fallout going from turn based overhead to semi turn based FPS. It did better than Zelda 2 at least.
The first game needed no improvement. At the time it was THE game.

Re: Best game ever? Round 2
Welcome to the site Parsons13 (whats with 13?) I think that both Zelda 1 and 2 had a little jenesayquois, about them. Something that isnt present in later installments. The rudementary style of play was really exceptional and to this day offers something that modern games cant seem to capture. Link to the past is great, but it doesnt have that same open world feeling that Zelda 1 and 2 have. Perhaps I'm on to something, perhaps it's nostalgia goggles...

Also, on that note, Super Mario Bros. 2 was actually what we know as Super Mario Bros.:The Lost Levels, which was originally only released in Japan. But what we know as Super Mario Bros. 2 was originally a completely different game created by director Kensuke Tanabe called 'Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic'. When game testers found the original SMB 2(The Lost Levels) to be too difficult, Tanabe and Nintendo decided to change the characters of Yume Kojo in characters from the Mario universe! If Nintendo and Tanabe would have never done this, lots of familiar aspects of the game may have never been, such the Shyguys, Bob-ombs, Birdo, Pokey the cactus, Marios ability to throw stuff, and the fact that Luigi is taller than Mario.........crazy stuff, man!!!!

Re: Best game ever? Round 2
It wasnt actually that it was deemed too hard, (smb2) it was that it was too similar. I think personally that SMB 2 (na) simply had a lot more to offer then SMB 2 (jp) so they pulled the old switcheroo.

I think you'll find that we're pretty knowledgeable about stuff like the SMB2 thing, this is a retro video game site after all. But I do appreciate you sharing it because not everyone who's gonna read this will know of it.

Re: Best game ever? Round 2
Oh for sure but I just didn't want him to be confused if no one responded too it. I think probably all the active members know that story at least somewhat. It's one of those things that a retro video game enthusiast usually knows like the Konami code.
