Is the site dead?
Hey everyone, I used to play a lot here before I got a busier lifestyle, but I will always consider RU something special. It is the best place to play older games IMO, and I don't like how everything seems to be die so fast these days on the internet, and only these boring social sites are left...
So curiously I wanted to check what's new here, and noticed all the posts are really old, which brought me to this question. What's going on?

Re: Is the site dead?
Most of us are old folk (I'm not old, I'm only 26, but I've been apart of this community for a very, VERY long time) that have our lives taking unfortunate precedent over this site, sadly. I wouldn't necessarily say the site's dead, though. Just right now, there are nearly 147k members, 62 of which are users, the rest being guests. Whether or not those are actual people, is a little bit difficult to tell. This is actually the most amount of people that have ever been on this site!
But it also just goes to show — they're more interested in the gaming portion of this site and not so much the forum part. If you notice, a lot of the more active topics are usually by the same people. But we come and go. Right now, there's been a lull, but there are still high scores being set nearly every day. In any case, welcome back to the best place on the web.

Thanks for the calming words
I wish the scoremode would work on Android (which is already possible technically)
People seem to be more on their phones these days

Re: Is the site dead?
There definitely doesn't appear to be as many of the high scorers active as perhaps they once were when the site was at its most busy and competitive. That said, I absolutely love playing here - the site is a real credit to its creators and I'm hugely thankful for the moderation work which goes into keeping the system organized and operational. Sorting and approving scores must be a lot of work.
I've discovered so many classics which I was never able to play back in the day and for that alone I'm massively thankful. The high score board is also unique and tremendously motivating for that "one more go" feeling. As Impossible Mission said: Stay awhile, stay forever!"

Re: Is the site dead?
Still my go-to when I don't have a rom. It's unfortunate that the really social players have moved on to other platforms like Twitch and Discord. RU is a fantastic time capsule.

Re: Is the site dead?
I still use RU to play any number of games. Internet Explorer is dedicated to RU on my PC. Much easier than using MAME or hooking up the old systems to these modern TVs. But yeah RU is competing for everyone's time with FB, Steam, TG, Aussie Arcade, Donkey Kong Forum, Twitch, Discord, but maybe not MySpace haha
Someone is still updating / checking scores, and I'm very grateful to them for that! Thanks and cheers!

Re: Is the site dead?
I just wanted to bump up this topic as there hasn't been much movement on updating scores in recent times.
Given the state of the world presently with Covid-19, it's a perfect time to hit the Retro Uprising arcade and make some scores.
If there's anything I can do to assist with maintaining or updating scores, I'm quite willing to learn and help out however I can.
Cheers

Couldn't agree more. While working at home I always make sure to get a few games in while on a break.

Re: Is the site dead?
I have not been able to work on RU in a very long time. There were a couple major bugs that have existed since December 2019 that were fixed today (June 13 2020).
1. Registration and Password Reset were broken. Fixed now.
2. Scores submissions were not being added to the moderation queue so they all appeared to just disappear. They were all fixed and approved today (nothing lost).
Those were major errors that probably severely hurt the already dwindling activity.
Reminder to read this thread if you are having trouble playing games.

The best/easiest solution is to use Internet Explorer. Click Start, type iexplore then press enter.

Re: Is the site dead?
Thanks for the fixes Kong. Good to see you back in action.
I got another one for you- when I try to load a game in Firefox it gives me that same link about how to play games but when you click it the forum post seems to open but you only see the top part like the forum sections. On Crome you get no message with the link.

Re: Is the site dead?
The long term goal is to eventually convert everything to JavaScript which will work everywhere but that is not going to happen until after the donation goal is met and that is coming at a very slow rate.
The following 3 options on Windows will continue to work.
I recommend option #1.
- If you have the current version of MS Edge (you can download it from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge ) then
- click "..." from the top right-hand corner of the browser
- click "Settings"
- click "Default browser" from the left hand menu
- change "Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode" to "allow"
- right click any RU tab in Edge and select "Reload tab in Internet Explorer Mode"
- toggle the option to "Open this page in IE next time".
- click "done".
- If you have slightly older version of MS Edge then
- click "..." from the top right-hand corner of the browser
- click "More Tools"
- choose "Open with Internet Explorer".
- This old version of FireFox will continue to work.

If you follow those steps it will force Edge to emulate IE. Edge will act like IE on any individual site after performing those steps.
RU has been limping along for years but not dead. The fact that it doesn't simply work in a default browser and you have to go through these extra steps is horrible and if everything was converted to JavaScript so it could run on any OS and in nearly any browser that would be so much better. But the changes on June 15th aren't going to make much of a difference as it is the same sort of confusion RU has dealt with since Edge first came out.
I think Option 2 in my previous post is probably how the majority (or close to it) are currently playing games here and this new Option 1 actually works slightly better. So while way worse than the options we had years ago, it's not really any worse than where it's been for the past couple years.
IE Tab might stop working, will have to wait and see what happens next month.

Re: Is the site dead?
Those instructions are for the current and future version. Microsoft has committed to inclueding an IE emulator in Edge until at least 2029.
