Never heard of it before. Is the name somehow related to the Grendel from Beowulf?

It may be. Grendel is a demon in the comics that takes control of people.
This "spirit of aggression" may have had control over the Grendel in the Beowulf story.
It is quite possible that Wagner's comic book character was inspired by Gardner's novel.
But then again maybe the writer, Matt Wagner may have just liked the name.

It wouldn't surprise me if he was influenced by Beowulf since lots of other stories are too. That and the name is definitely cool.
