Urgently seeking rent-to-own home in california...... Please help :(
I'm urgently looking for a Rent-to-Own option (Preferably in Humboldt County California, and preferably in or near Arcata, CA) with at least 2 bedrooms and pets allowed for my Girlfriend, Our dog, and I We are currently staying in a small temporary guest room in my girlfriend's Aunt's house and almost everything we own is being stored in my brother's room at my Mom's house :/ My girlfriend is almost 19 and I just turned 23 and we are both very neat, clean people Our dog is medium-sized, very friendly and well behaved, and is trained extreemly well So if anybody can help us, we'd very much appreciate that and would gladly return the favor ASAP You may either post your answer here, or email me at SystemRulez@hotmail.com ^_6

You'll have better luck on craigslist.org than here.

I think he was going for asking here first because he knows some of us. Wouldn't it be nice if your landlord was someone you already kind of knew?

I think he just wanted to update us on what's going on in his life.

Get a list of realtors in the area. Check their websites.
Furthermore, put rent to own homes in your google search bar. I promise you will have infinately more hits than on RU.

I would imagine the knowing your landlord part. That would suck. I would definately not want to have a personal relationship with something that I have to give money to monthly. What if I have to be evicted or the landlord turns out to be a chump. That would effectivly end that relationship.

Second part.
@xerq: Go to graigslist. That would be a better route. Or do what Jim suggested and do some homework on the area.

Re: Urgently seeking rent-to-own home in california...... Please help :(
It's not always bad to be friends with your landlord, it depends on the landlord. My last one was a long time family friend and he left us alone besides expecting a check. If something went wrong he always trusted us and helped us. If we complained about other tenants he knew we weren't being difficult or making anything up. The place was a dump but I still look back on it fondly.
My current landlord is a typical old Portuguese guy, friendly as long as you don't try to screw him over. He leaves us alone but he does like to talk a lot sometimes. He also brings us gifts from Portugal when he travels there, I think he likes us.

Actually I think it's because my wife is Italian. He didn't seem to like us at first until he found out about that. Weird but it was a noticeable change in mood when that happened.

Re: Urgently seeking rent-to-own home in california...... Please help :(
It's not as odd as you think. From talking to him I found out that Italians and Portuguese(actually from Portugal) have a sort of kinship with each other. It might not be true anymore but he's close to 70 so for him it is. It's also funny how openly racist he can be. Any spanish looking person is a "mexicano" to him. He's not even afraid to tell them, he'll yell it out while standing there talking to me - "Hey mexicano!". Thankfully they probably just think he's a crazy old man.
On the flip side of that one of my grandfathers was kinda racist too. He called spanish looking people all "portagees". I think it's because were he used to live there was a lot of Portuguese.

If he's in his seventies, it kind of makes sense. Old people can be pretty racist, yet it doesn't phase anyone.

@steven- Yes? In case you're not aware racism wasn't as taboo 50 years ago or so. Either way he's not a mean racist, he generalizes about people and it's obviously something he grew up with. My original comment wasn't racist, it was accurate. You don't know many old Portuguese people do you? Besides that my comment didn't talk about his racism, you just quote mined it to make that implication.

I remember the time that Cam said that typical black men were fast runners..(and a lot of users jumped down his throat about it) was that racist, or was that accurate?

Re: Urgently seeking rent-to-own home in california...... Please help :(
According to what Kong said that claim isn't technically untrue because slaves were bred to be more athletic/fit so that increased their twitch reflexes. Or something. But it wasn't just that claim that made what he said wrong, it was refering to black people as negros(at least I think that's what he said). He didn't know better then, he does now. Either way it isn't the same thing.
What I said was a generalization based on my experiences. Older Portuguese men, and other Mediterranean men, tend to be very classy/respectful as long as that courtesy is extended to them. It's a cultural thing. Also Portuguese is not a race. Quit looking for things to pick at.
People from the older generations tend to be more racist, in general.

I know I'm making a big deal over nothing, its just the double standard that I don't agree with, if Cam would have said, "Yeah so my landlord is a typical Chinese guy..." He would have been berated. Anyway, I'm Portuguese and I can assure you we are all very different.

Re: Urgently seeking rent-to-own home in california...... Please help :(
Yeah but are you like 70, from my area and actually from Portugal? I know generalizations don't fit everyone. But in my experience this is how older people from that region are.
If he would've said Chinese it would've been different because that's not a race. If he would've said Asian then it would've been comparable to what he said.
Either way I apologize if my off handed generalization offended anyone. It was only meant to paint a picture of what I was talking about. It's like if I said "A typical Canadian dude" or "A typical dude from Mass", it doesn't mean I'm talking about everyone and it shouldn't be taken very seriously.

I was just kidding I'm not Portuguese, you musta been suspicious, lol. Anyway, I apologize too, I essentially created the racism myself by bring attention to something so minor.

There wasn't any racism, it's not a race. We might be guilty of being ethnically insensitive or something, not sure what it'd be called.
Either way we derailed the hell out of this topic.
