Don't get the wrong idea here, folks.
The Retronauts podcast is dead. Apparently the blog is going to die soon, too! We just love killing things around here. I suppose it's in our nature as gamers.
That being said... there's
a new episode of Retronauts online today: Episode 2011-A. We didn't have any second thoughts or anything, though, and the next time we'll be doing anything along these lines is at PAX East (or so we presume; they could always deny our panel application). It's just that, well, we've always started each new year with a year-in-review production, and we don't see why the silly little detail that there's no longer a podcast should get in the way of us keeping up the tradition.
I did my best to round up a classic cast for the 'cast, pulling Frank Cifaldi,
Chris Kohler, and alumnus-in-exile
Scott Sharkey into the studio for nearly 90 minutes of discussion about a half-century of years ending with a -1 or -6: 1951 through 1996. That's a lot of years! And after that's over, stick around for another 20 minutes of rambling free association.
This episode was of course plagued by the usual Retronauts recording complications. For instance, we were supposed to have recorded this back in December. Also, the computer stopped recording right as we were warming up to the year 1991, so brace yourself for a weird discontinuity in there. I experienced a bunch of other frustrations in the production process as well. It made me happy not to be dealing with nonsense on a regular basis.

Incidentally, this episode's musical selections are largely taken from the
Final Fantasy IV Minimal Album, a mini-CD which contains several Nobuo Uematsu tracks that weren't actually included in the game. It seemed appropriate to fill an apocryphal podcast with apocryphal music, you know?
