The Ren and Stimpy Show

My second post on a cartoon this show is probably my favorite animated tv show from the 90's. I grew up on this show and I think this was a classic program. And here is a breakdown of the show.

Sypnosis: A psycotic ashma hound Chiuhuahua, Ren, and an ignorant red cat, Stimpy star in crazy, warped adventures each uniquely different then the last, like the Looney Tunes. For example, one day Ren and Stimpy can be in space and the next Ren is the victim of Stimpy's happy helmet and the infamous Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy song. If you like classic cartoons you'll probably like this show.

The Spumco Era cira 1990-1992: The Ren and Stimpy Show premiered on August 11, 1991 and became an instant hit. The brainchild of Canadian animator, John Kricfalusi who wanted to bring people back to cartoony cartoons and away from the toy-based cartoons of the 80's. People everywhere fell in love with the warped adventures of the insane duo. Ren and Stimpy was Nickeloeon's first really true animated hit. It premiered alongside Rugrats and Doug which were extremely bland compared to this show. The episodes where really gross but still funny, with gruesome close ups, wild takes, exagerated posses. This show just brought back the greatness of animation and everyone loved it, except Nickelodeon.

The Takeover circa 1992-1993: Well Nickelodeon had a problem with the show's grossness and had a problem with the weirdness, and Ren's meaness towards Stimpy. Nickelodeon tried to censor the show and prevented viewers from seeing things like Magic Nose Goblins and other things along those lines. Nick also didn't get the idea of non-continuity cartoons. Like when Spumco tried to make the episode Space Madness, Nick asked "Why are they in space? It doesn't make sense! Kids won't understand this. So the episode almost got canned and because of all the frequent battles with John K. resulted in missed deadlines of over six weeks so that resulted in Nickelodeon eventually firing Kricfalusi from his own creation. After John K. was out of the picture, Nickelodeon's takeover was complete.

The Games Animations Era circa 1993-1995: Nickelodeon soon opened their own animation company Games Animation and literally threw away all that was good about Ren and Stimpy. Ren was mean at Stimpy for no reason, in the Spumco episodes there was always a reason Ren got angry but now he just gets angry. Ren doesn't even act like a friend anymore and his voice sucks compared to John K's Ren voice. Billy West's version didn't sound the same and wasn't as spirited. The episodes had weird grossness that wasn't needed and wasn't in context with thes story like the older episodes. And most of all, the newer episodes didn't have the same fun feeling as the older ones and the stories were all weak and the expositon wasn't was poor. People stopped watching the show and the ratings fell, Ren and Stimpy was eventually canned in 1995 and the Ren and Stimpy Show ended on a low note.

Impact: The Ren and Stimpy Show helped inspire other animators to create their own creator driven cartoons. Without Ren and Stimpy we wouldn't have Spongebob Squarepants, Rocko's Modern Life, Dexter's Lab, Beavis and Butthead, etc. The show pushed the limits of good taste and to this day, people still do gross close-up paintings. Sara Lee Bread uses the Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy song for their advertisements and if you watch newer animated shows like Spongebob, you can see the Ren and Stimpy influence. Sadly though, American Animation is reverting back to the ways in the 80's, toy-based animation. I mean common Bratz, a show based on some dolls? Lets hope that some show like Ren and Stimpy can break this business back to the days of Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, and Mickey Mouse

Influence? I swear it's the same animators and writers. Not insulting Sponge bob, it's actually a pretty funny kids show.

Amen. Sadly though we won't see much besides commercialized cartoons until theres no money left to squeeze from the stone.
Personally this is one of my major pet peeves, Big companies like to try and force feed thier crap to the most impressionable people among us, Kids.
AND, Bratz needs to be banned asap, talk about teaching little girls bad things, those dolls are sluts and they don't even try to pretend otherwise. Have you seen the Lil bratz? They are literally toddlers who also dress like sluts, I saw a package for one where she was posing against a pool table like a playboy model would.

Sorry to rant, I just can't stand it.

Right On Dudebro! Ban those toy shows. What we need to do is get back to good old traditional animation and get back to real cartoons like Looney Tunes. Now there is a cartoon that really takes advantage of animation. What is Bratz? Anything you can do in Bratz you can do in live-action and in fact, I think I just saw a commercial for a Bratz movie! Man, what has the world come to? Looney Tunes has stuff you can never do and its actually funny. When did animation lose the feeling of funny moving drawings. It started going down in the 60's with Scooby Doo but at least that show was tolerable. Sure it had some bad character designs but it was still entertaining. That's what I love about Ren and Stimpy and cartoons in that cloth is that they really take advantage that the cartoon is a drawing that can do anything you want as long as you can draw it! Executives think kids hate cartoony cartoons or black and white so they replace it with crap about teenage girls because girls play with it. Old cartoons appealed to everyone and not only were they drawn better but they were way more human then the Bratz and if you ask me we need entertaining animation

HEY! Don't diss scooby doo! It was meant to be campy(I hope) :P

Growing up I was very into the cartoons for transformers and GI joe. Hand drawn I think.
All the new cartoons I see when I flip through the channels are mostly CGI or the like and it is kinda sad. But, I also can see the advantages of the new technology.

Sorry, didn't mean to diss Scooby Doo, I like the campiness. I never really like toy based cartoons but their are some good ones like Transformers, never was into G.I. Joe though. CG can be good if used by the right people. Bratz, it's just like, a waste of life.

I love the attention to detail, Rens horrified expression, stimpys look of ecstacy. Not to mention the disturbing lump in the hose. Pure art no question.

I have season 1 and 2 on DVD. Great show. I loved it.

I didn't like cartoons all that much as a kid. I watched more adult things I think. Not sure why. But Ren and Stimpy was one of my favorites.

Best character is the Horse, my favorite episode is the episode when Sven comes to visit, and I don't think I ever watched a non-spumco episode.

Mr Horse is for sure the coolest character.
"No sir, I don't like it."

The episode where the highrise building was on fire "Fire Dogs" was really funny. It made me feel bad for him when he broke both legs and had to crawl away in agonizing pain.

Also the one where they are stranded on a planet, I forget the name. Another one where I felt bad for them, when they were in the aliens stomach.

But, it just shows how good the show is to make people feel for the characters.

I've seen a couple of Ren & Stimpy episodes, never really followed it though.

And Dudebro, I totally agree with you on banning Bratz. (although I have never seen Lil' Bratz :|) Kids shows these days are always showing little girls dressing like grown ups. It's so wrong.

Yeah, you do feel for the characters even though their a cat and dog, they're more human then the Bratz. I mean what human is like the Bratz. Humans aren't limited to being always happy or cool, people have a wide range of expressions that Bratz will never accomplish because of how bland they are. We should ban the Bratz I mean it already brainwashed my five year old cousin, since she lives in the Philippines I don't know how she acts anymore but she was obsessed before. Well anyway, the episode where they are stranded on the planet is called Marooned, I love that episode. My favorite has got to be either Sven Hoek, Stimpy's Fan Club, Stimpy's Invention, well all of the first and second season episodes are my favorites because each one is completely different from the last and is always entertaining for me anyway. Well, as for the Games Animation episodes...No sir, didn't like it.
