video game quirks

This is an old thread I started back at evg. It was fun so let's try it here.

The idea is that you name "quirky" things about video games. I'll start:

-Trying to button mash your way through long dialog, then talking to the person again and starting the whole conversation over.

-Selling your sword thinking it will give you enough gold to to buy an upgrade, but your math was a little off so you have to go fight a few battles unarmed.

-Spelling dirty words in the bricks in mario bros. or the grass/dirt in a link to the past.

Yeah that's one of those video game things that really bothers me. Thankfully most new games let you skip the entire scene rather than just speed it up.

-ducking as you cruise into the eagles mouth in smb 2.

-When you heal your pokemon at a pokemon center, and mash the A button to make it go faster, then you end up healing your pokemon again.

-Unskippable cutscenes that start over when you die. I REALLY hate this one.

- Playing a new game with weird controls and you forget which one does what, so you keep throwing bombs or jumping instead of doing what you want to do

- Finding out that just about everything in the series has a nod to other games/anime.

- Current games with no audio adjustment options (i.e. Speech, Music, Sound Effects). Then when you play the music is so loud you can't hear the speech. Which leads us to...

- Games with no subtitle options. This really makes me angry. TV has been using closed caption since the 80's, but games are still so behind in this area. Some games have it, but there are still many that don't give you this option. I don't like to play every game with subtitles, but it's nice to have the option especially when games don't let you adjust the individual audio options.

I hate both of those with a passion. I check settings first on a new game and if I see subtitles I enable them. I don't care if it takes me out of the story or w/e, I hate missing what an NPC said because of music or other stuff in game. Some games have you running around with stuff exploding and people are expected to hear the conversation?

Because Mario Kart Wii is designed for all ages. That means even little kids with no skills and old people who have almost no idea what's going on.

They did a pretty ham fisted balancing job imo. Don't get me wrong, I love the game and it's a lot of fun, offline or with friends. I got so sick of the online because of constantly being in first and being assaulted with about ten items near the finish line so I have no chance to recover. Seeing a bunch of kid looking Miis blow by me was not fun.
Sorry to rant but this really bugged me. At least the battle mode is good.

I think this turns off a lot of people to tactics games and it's unfortunate. You have to think of it as just slowing down the action so you can use more strategy, like a chess game.
