Castlevania III

I have this game on my Wii VC, and I've finally gotten to the last level. It's so freaking difficult. It's short, but it seems impossible.

I tried taking the Alucard path, but I could not beat it for my life. Right now I have Sypha with me, and he's been pretty good so far. As a matter of fact, I get my axe handed to me when fighting a boss as Trevor so I know he's handy, but I don't know if Grant would be any better, since I've never taken him farther than the ghost ship.

My question is, do I keep trying to get to Dracula or do I restart and pick up Grant instead of Sypha? Also, are there any tricks to getting to the first door?

I haven't played in a long time but I remember liking Grant more than the rest. Alucard was good too though.
