Best 5 year window
If you could own every game released during a single 5 year window but could never play a game released outside of that time period, which 5 years would you choose?
Time line of console release dates:
Example: if you pick 1991-1996 you get the tailend of 7800, SMS, and NES, the first half of SNES and Jaguar, the first year of Saturn and PS1, all of Virtual Boy (woot!), the majority of GBX, Genesis and Game Gear, plus all of the arcade, computer and other games released during those years. But nothing before or after. Which means you could never play SMB1 or Minecraft.
Rules.
Original official releases only. Wil Virtual Console, re-releases, anniversary editions, hacks, fan-made recreations, emulators, etc don't count.
No picking games from the future. 2014 is the cutoff.
Bonus question. Which 10 years were the worst? You can have all games except for one 10 year period after 1980.

Re: Best 5 year window
I guess 2010-2014. Not because I feel they're the best but because I feel I've played the least of.

Re: Best 5 year window
@KY. No, you are picking the only games that ever existed, for your entire life.
Reason the question came to mind, I think the vast majority of games from about 1997-2013 blew. But it looks like the past couple years have really been on the up swing, starting to be as good as the 80s-90s again.

Re: Best 5 year window
I can't pick only five years of games to ever exist, its just too absurd.
While I think 1991-95 was the golden age of console gaming, I might not even be interested in games if it wasn't for the the games of 1982-86. But 1982-86 wouldn't be the years I'd prefer.

Re: Best 5 year window
1993, 95, 97, 07, 12
You never specified if the years are consecutive or not. Sure you said window but that's a bit vague, maybe I have five small connected windows?

Definitely 1991-1995. Many of my favorite games ever made - including Eternal Champions CD: Challenge from the Darkside were released in this span.

I'm not sure personally. Would probably be like 1998-2002 or something.

Re: Best 5 year window
@kong, you could play SMB on All-stars.
Okay a few questions,
-do the games come out when the originally did? For example if I chose an era from before I was born are the odds that I might never even have heard of video games
-are we aware of what games we are missing out on?
-are we allowed to make our own games?

Re: Best 5 year window
Hmm... Based off where my favourite games/consoles are located. What I mostly play to boot.
94-99.
Namely I get the entire Donkey Kong Country Trilogy + DK64 in this window. The best era of the best gaming company for me as well. Rareware.

I take it arcade games are included?
For me the thought of a massive room with every arcade cabinet from 1981 to 1985 is hard to beat.
Basically from round about this:
to about this:

I think I could easily survive without having to play anything from outside those five years. No Pac or Berzerk. But Ms Pac and Frenzy would compensate.

Nope. Original releases only. That is like the Virtual Console - cheating.

Haha, oops. Twas a typo. Sure we'll go with that. Or I just didn't count, or cheated. If I have to trim it, I gotta favour 99 over 94. Can't miss my favourite game.
95-99.

Re: Best 5 year window
Hmm. If you are counting hours you subtract the extra number. If you work from 4 to 9 you worked 5 hours not 6.
Is the final year in the span playable or not? If you say 94-99 do you expect a game released in Dec of 99 to be on your list?

Makes sense. 4-9's a shift at work. Could have been subconsciously.
Wasn't thinking it through too much. Just thought about Snes/N64 era. DKC released in 94, Dk64 released in 99.
Bottomline, I didn't think about it much.
Actually was thinking about it recently. Not a whole lot off the top of my head made in 99 that I care a lot about. Dk64 is my favourite game. Reason enough to justify a full year? 94 worth more than one game to me? Banjo Kazooie is similar. Could suffice. Anyways, interesting topic for sure.
